Also, as some have said sometimes you just lose fish. I think some days the fish just aren't as aggressive and they are making half as$$ed attempts at biting. I've fished some streams when my buddy and I lost all our fish immediately and hooked 10+. Other days we land them all no problems at all.

Stack 3 (or 2) #2 or #1 owner or gamis and half hitch top hook to keep from slipping down top shank. Put top hook on small end of dual lock snap. Put large end of dual lock snap on spoon. I use 65# braided for hooks. I use that set-up on anchor with spoons with about 8 to the boat for every 1 lost. I have a lot of siwashes that I will never use.

Some people over think spoon fishing.

Including me....... so why not use a smaller circle hook with this hang back method? I just can't believe it's much safer with the same big ol hook.

I have found I don't lose fish on spoons if I don't fish spoons.

Hangback circles on my trolling spoons are next on the agenda for Team eyeFISH

Thanks for finding that pic, Doc. Was looking for it yesterday.

That was a PITA to make, btw.

To be fair, the DirectDrive BCS deserves an honorable mention and another trip to the top....

I gave the hang back method a shot this winter with some old fly backing I had hanging around. Seemed to hookup with a better percentage than the swivel with split ring I used previously. I was just a little worried that it was messing with the action though.

Thanks, Doc.

I'm not a dyed-in-the-wool spoon guy, and my experience with them has been mixed.
I found that when hooked up to a nasty head-shaker with a spoon, there is a lot of weight shaking back and forth.
Casting spoons are superior for long casts, wind-cutting and fast water but their weakness is during the fight, IMO (maintaining hookup).

So, I came up with the Bead Chain Spoon.
When running, it looks like a conventional spoon although it looks odd all splayed out in the pic.
Casting performance is decent.
Most important is that once hooked up, Mr. Big has a harder time getting rid of it because the connection does not flow through the spoon.
He's on a pseudo flying gaff so to speak.

If you're getting spoons thrown off too often, try the BCS.

I gave the BCS a shot, but I just couldn't get it to swim right enough to enjoy the landing percentage.

My first couple gobbles on the dacron hangback rig have resulted in a swing and a miss, but I haven't totally given up on it. Need more data,

You'll miss some fish because the hook was pointing the wrong way and/or reacts less to where the fish hit your offering. Setting the hook back and allowing the hook to rotate on a swivel will increase hookups by allowing that hook point to rotate freely to a place to set into the fish based on where pressure is first applied to the hook. Even with pressure applied to the back of the hook, it will flip right around to a pressure point and might find home, and you'll end up hooking more fish that way.

For lines, straight 12 or 15# monofilament to the spoon all the way.

Snowflakes tend to lose a lot of fish because of their lack of muscle mass while setting the hook.

Another aspect that hasn't been mentioned (or I might have passed over it) may be your rod/reel selection. If you were throwing 8lb leader on an heavy baitcaster, you will break off if not used correctly...

I use a G-Loomis 1264C (10'6") with a Calcutta 200D and 15-20lb P-Line CX depending on time of year and spoon weight. I like a little bit of stretch but I also set the hook like a typical bass fisherman... The long rod is great for upward leverage on the fish and also the crucial parabolic bend to keep the fish pinned.

I also run 1/0 or 2/0 Mustad siwash hooks, best made IMO. All of the above has resulted in many more fish hook ups and landing ration significantly increased to about 75% give or take...
