Nice Pic! My pup really started to increase his pointing in the past few weeks, but he is still mostly working as a flusher.
Was out at Crescent lake yesterday. Dog goes into the corn, I hear "cluck cluck" and out he comes out with a rooster and delivers. As far as I can tell, the bird was healthy and there were no obvious wounds. I guess it was just a stupid pen raised bird.
Cheers! SD

I don't hunt, but am having seconds thoughts. Tye is obviously "hunting" any time he gets outdoors. He has pointed slugs, robbins, and crows. Will chase ducks till they land in the water. Doesn't want them bad enough to swim after them. I would love to see how he would react to a phesant hunt.

Cool picture of a lab on point!
DV - You should take him hunting.
Watching your dog hunt is one of the greatest joys in life. Especially if your dog is a hunting dog. Even if he isn't trained specifically to hunt. When he is hunting he will be in his element and you will see how much he is enjoying the feeling of being a predator.
If you are interested let me know if you are in the Elma area. I could take you two out on the river and try and shoot a duck for him to retrieve.

RR: Lets do it. I am pretty open most weeks now.
Tye has not been around nearby gunshots, but showed no fear in a major thunderstorm.

Dave _ I would HIGHLY reccomend taking the pup to a hunt club / game farm for the first time out. Controlled environment, no other hunters, and guarenteed birds. Cooke Canyon over in Ellensberg is an aswesome place to take a first time pup.
I agree 100% with RR "Watching your dog hunt is one of the greatest joys in life"! My lab lives for it and you can not believe the ammount of joy he gets from a morning in the field hunting birds.
Cheers! SD

Sweet. I would love that. He has zero hunting training but is pretty good as far as obedience.

It was amazing watching my old lab Chester (RIP) train himself. I got him when I was 14 and did the best I could with my high school schedule. I remember realizing that my dog had figured out to get the cripples first, the long retrieves next, and the close ones last. I never had time to show him that stuff, he just got it. Amazing.

You may have to take Tye solo until he realizes what he is doing. This will require a shooter/Achewter Hillbilly name fer it. The first bird that falls while he is watching it fly away will be like his first piece of ASS. If Tye goes with Blue he may just want to play with Blue. Blue will want to hunt and may let Tye know he is out of line. It could be with what Dave says about Tye's natural interest in hunting it could be all good from the git go. The first time Mickey saw me shoulder a gun she got very excited. The first time i shot around her she took off in the direction I shot to find what ever it was that i must have killed. Needless to say we were both dissapointed.

I'll bet he does just fine his first time out and has a blast. I swear my dog teaches himself how to hunt more than I do through training. I figure my job is mostly to provide him the opportunity to learn Same here. Besides basic obetiant training I did very little bird training. I figure the dog know more about bird hunting instinctivly then I'll ever know. I like to say I'm going for a walk but my pup is hunting. That holds true whether I'm carrying a shotgun or not. I also agree about going solo at first for two reasons. 1st off the older dogs may not be to friendly to a playing pup when they are in "business" mode. And secondly pups seem to ignore any good lessons they may learn from more experianced dogs and focus in on and "hardwire" the bad lessons. Not saying Blue has any bad habits of course
