I'm planning on making the trip up there sometime next week and was wondering if I need a Weyhauser pass to drive on those roads (spur gate 10). I'm guessing I do but I don't want to spend 65$ on the sticker to find out I don't even need it! thanks

I don't show Kanim in my book (it's an older one), so I can't comment on Spur 10. Where is the lake located?
Once you get to the Spur 10 gate, if you go left or right, you need a pass. If you head straight, you don't. Be advised that the Spur 10 gate is closed until 3:00 PM to public access. Those logging trucks really haul on those roads....
I'll check my other book and see where it is located.

fishhunter,

If you want to go to Kanim you better be young, skinny, in shape and have good "off trail" skills.

It isn't your everyday hike.

You can find this lake on Green Trails maps and there's no (maintained) trail to the lake, so you have to bushwhack.

Micro Brew. If you have a Mt.Baker/Snoqualmie Natural Forest map. It's at the end of forest service road 5730. Jim S. rolleyes

been trying to think of how to write my "report" up. Had one real good evening of fishing where I caught 10 and missed another 10 in about a 90 minute period.

I was fishing caddis pupa under an indicator/bobber and striking when I saw a swirl close to the indicator. It was in fast water and a caddis hatch or egg laying period was going on.

Jim, do you mean Kanim is reached from FS road 5730 or is a bushwhack hike from a pullout on 5730?

Micro, I'm headed to "secret waters" next weekend if you'd like to learn a western WA stream spot. Takes a little hike.. are you in shape?? Would you wait for a guy who wasn't? It would be next Sunday. This next weekend I'll be on the north fork of the Snoqualmie.

Read Ron's report on Kanim. It tells you pretty well where to park and how to get there.

I think he blew out a knee on that hike from the rough terrain... you might ask him.

Micro Brew. Wrong Jim. I'm Jim S. not Trout Master. I don't know anything about this lake. I was just pointing out where it was.. Like I said I don't hike, got bad knees. I have trouble going up stairs. Flat and even is no problem, up hill is. So when I stream fish I tend to find a easy way to get on a stream. laugh

Leecher-I know that Kanim Lake fairly difficult to get too, that is one of the reasons why I am going there in the first place! As a member of King County Search & Rescue I am fully capable of wilderness navigation (without a GPS!). I'm looking forward actually to rappeling off the 200ft. or so cliff I've heard about.I appreciate your concern though! Far too many people try to do things that they aren't phisically ready or trained for and end up getting hurt. I'll give yall a report once I get back!

Rapalling off a 200 ft cliff to get to a lake?!? Now that's one picture I'd love to get for the front page!

ZL - Bad for me the next two weekends. I have Sunday available but already committed. On the weekend of the 18th, my younger son has a B-day and we will be up at Mason Lake for the weekend - perhaps I'll take trip over to Price.
I don't know squat about the N. Fork but would certainly like to learn. Can I take a rain check?

Zen was wrong,I didn't blow a knee going up there, I dislocated an elbo. A revolting development when you are alone and 1 1/2 miles from the car. Had to dump my fish in the creek and use my fish sack for a sling.
DON'T try to hike the creek bed. In summer the rocks are coated with a black algae that is hard to see. I slipped coming out. It was so dam hot, followning the creek seemed the cool thing to do. I slpped on a sluce and dislocated my elbo 180 degrees catching my fall. Ended up in 3'of cool water in deep pain. Popped it back in myself and hiked out to car hurting.

In reply to other queries. There is no campground or even decent place to sleep at the lake. There is no trail, just a nasty brushwhack of 2 1/2 miles. There is a cliff at 2 miles and it's very vertical except a finger of yellow cedar on the left side facing up the creek. Go up this 200-250' to the bench the lake is on. You sort of follow the creek up from the road end (but stay out of it).Don't even think of going to this lake unless you are in shape and a seasoned cross country hiker/navigator.

Too bad about the elbow! Was it your casting arm? Thanks for the report, I'll put Kanim down on may list for one of those days where I feel the need to punish myself.

Good luck with your Kanim Lake quest, fishhunter.

I've met S&R types before and the ones I met were what I'd class as average woodsman skills.

Back when I started hiking we had to navigate without GPS. Also no cell phones either.
GPS's are for yuppies and weenies. You ain't no weenie, are you boy??

Seriously, if you do the Kanim exploration and like it, join the Trailblazers/Hi-Lakers as there's other lakes worth exploring that are off trail. If they've got fish, the Trailblazers stocked them.... and probably pre-GPS.
