Thanks Frank

Don't wait. Get a pair of the currently cheap and discontinued ones. I have the non-zip model but so far these are some of the longest lasting I have ever owned. I do so much bush whacking that my experiences with waders usually is in the months and never years. These things are surprisingly durable at having lasted about 10 months of abuse.

Why wait for an as of yet unproven durability feature (the sonic thing) when I can tell you for certain with no special favors from Redington that the CPX are a hell of a good deal right now. Usually discontinued waders are crap and leak and are thus discontinued but I think Redington simply is working really hard to get rid of the terrible customer experiences from their earlier wader products by updating the CPX so soon. I know a few guys that hated Redington after buying their waders but these CPX are a different thing.

I have tried these particular waders:

-Cabelas Wet Plus

-Patagucci Wetmaster

-Simms GWet

-Orvis Pro Wet

No wader keeps me dry for long but these have. In fact you know what blew out on mine yesterday at the river? One of the buckles on the suspender straps. That is a first for me in many years. A pair of waders whose buckle broke before they leaked.

In summary, I am glad I have a brand new pair sitting in a box next to my fishing rods. wink

the new Redington Sonic Pro waders were sent out into the field months ago by the hundreds to guides and others that spend a couple hundred days on the water a year. the results so far have exceeded all expectations.

How did the new models hold up to extensive walking/hiking?

I have an old model and found that while they were a very comfortable wader they did not tolerate much hiking (began leaking in less than 40 miles) - from chaffing along the inseams.

At that price point they will be my new set of waders. Sick of Dan Leakailys and would rather support a local company plus they dont make my butt look too big...

I could not tell you as I do not have anecdotal evidence on hand beyond days on water. However, I will say that the Sonic Pro will be a much different fit than the current CPX. The current CPX's tend to run fairly baggy compared to other bands. This pug leg factor increases the wear dramatically on the inner leg and seems and can reduce life.

Dan Baileaks?

As for the butt, they might be good, but they aren't magic Keith smile

Simms finally got smart and moved the seams from the inside/outside of the legs, to the front/back of the legs. My current pair of g3's is the longest lasting pair of waders I have ever owned, got almost a full season out of them before they started leaking!

Far as I know, Redington is the first to start using sonic welding technology for waders. It has been around for a few years in other garments and lines (arcteryx, patagonia, etc). For the most part it seems to be pretty solid. I have had a few issues with delamination over time + extended use in a few my pieces that have welded seams. I will be curious to know how well the Redington's hold up when subject to the abuse that most pairs of waders suffer.

Coley,
Orvis has had their Sonicseam waders out for awhile now. Same basic premise as the new Redingtons.
You can read some customer reviews in the link below.
http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?...subcat_id=18941

I'm going on two years now with my current Redington waders. They've been great and I plan to try a pair of the new sonic pros with a zipper when these finally blow out.

Cool. I will do a bit of reading up.

It's good technology really. I think it has a lot of potential. I just wonder about durability and longevity, not that either of those things are really present in current makes and models of wading apparatus.

Since I write a product review column for F&TJ I've had the opportunity to try both the Orvis Sonicseam and Cabela's welded seam waders (yes, Cabela's apparently beat everyone else to welded seam construction, I tried a pair last year). Deliveries have been slow on the Redington waders and I'm currently expecting a pair sometime in January.

I wore the Orvis Sonicseam waders htis spring, summer and fall with no leakage or signs of wear. Leland Miyawaki, fishing dept. manager at Orvis Bellevue, has been wearing a pair since they were introduced and is pretty enthusiastic about them.

If my butt wasn't so big, I would've had a pair of the new ones to try out ... but I'm waiting like the rest of the crowd as a big boy. I will say, I have been very happy with the zippered cpx's I have now. Have been wearing a pair since fall with a fair amount of walking in BC and the wear & tear of a full salmon season and not the slightest leak yet smile My only complaint was the lighter weight elastic straps that tended to let the adjustment move a little ... but that has since been beefed up. Happy to see a new quality product with a little more reasonable price point.

I've been wearing the CPX waders since they came out and they have held up better than any pair I've owned. I've worn the new ones for about 5 months now (my butts big, but not to big smile ) and they are a much better fit in my opinion. They made the legs a better fit and loosened up the ankles just enough to make it easier to get in and out of them. They feel absolutely bullet proof as well. I'm suprised by how many people i've heard express concern about the zipper leaking. The zipper is the last place you will get a leak on these waders.
