I asked for a Cannon D10 for Christmas and received a Pentax Optio W90. I don't know much about this camera. Have any of you used this camera? What do you think of it? Would I be better off returning it and getting the D10. I have been using an Olympus 1050 sw. I am really hoping to find a better option. So what do you think? Is the Optio W90 an alright point and shoot to haul around while fishing?

Do a search on the net..........think people like this BECAUSE its waterpoof.............

It's ok......but probably doesn't take as high quality of pic's as some of the other......so the trade off.....waterpoof vs. better pic's....

Happy New Year.....

Better put the Panisonic Lumix TS2 in the mix if you are still deciding. I have one now and like it a lot. I've used a lot of Canons in the past and have like them quite a bit. I was looking at the D10 and went with the Lumix.

I've heard mixed reports about he Optio's in general.

I've got one and I really like it...for the price it did a great job, is waterproof, decent video quality...I didn't have more than a couple hundred to spend on a camera, and am pleased with my purchase. The only negative thing I can say about it is the poor night shots, (so no bar-hopping with it).

Have had my Optio for about 4 years and for the most part love it.
Once in awhile it will take an out of focus picture but am sure it is because I try to take the photo to quick before the camera has had a chance to focus itself.
It is waterproof and has worked great.

I've had a couple of the Pentax Optio waterproof cameras and now recently got the Panasonic Lumix TS2. The Lumix is significantly better than either of the Optios in literally every regard. Most importantly better image quality and much faster shots.

Yup. That's my latest underwater camera.

Got it in late November and used it for the SRC. Took some god shots....even if they were only of brats.

We'll see how it goes with my luck and cameras.

Now, I just need to get the hell out of the house and on to the water to try it out on some real fish!

I have an old W10 or20 that spent an overnight in the back of my baot in a pool of water completely submerged for 14 or so hours. Pulled it out the next day and worked fine.
They are bomb proof little cameras but due to the waterproofing they will never have the quallity of shot some are looking for. They newer pentaxes are a little better.
The best thing you can do is try and just fit your subject itn the frame without having to zoom. That will give you the clearest pics without looking grainy.

Parker... still waiting..... wink

I even properly rigged up an 8wt to float fish beads with! (I can't get myself to call that "fly" fishing").

Wife is gone all this week up to Whistler. I'm stuck with the boy until the weekend. I'll be painfully rearin' to be on the water by next weekened or the following.

There's all of Feb/March too! Careful what you wish for! wink

Hard to argue Leica glass.

I also gun the Oly Stylus 1030 SW. It does some things OK but I'm not a happy camper with overall image quality. May look at the Lumix as a PnS replacement.

I think I got lucky...I've got a Pentax Optio W10, old school, and it still takes good pics, and always has, many of which have made their way into fishing mags.

That being said, the reviews on them have been very mixed, as AP said above, but I can't get myself to drop the coin on a new camera since it still works fine, and after all these years is still waterproof as all get out...

Fish on...

Todd

I don't have the Panasonic waterproof model yet, but do have an LX2 and the newer LX5. These are very popular with pro photogs like myself and produce high quality images.

The Panasonic TX2 is on my shopping list so I can easily make some underwater photos without using my underwater housing for my Nikons , or my dip & dunk dry bag with a camera port.

I used my LX2 to illustrate an article for Western Outdoors a couple of years ago and never even took my pro model Nikon out of the bag. One of the images ran one and one third pages as an introductory 2 page spread .

I'm sold on Panasonic for their quality.
