OK.....let's help us all out.........

2 stroke outboards.......Past Warranty period, does it REALLY make a difference what major brand of oil a person uses??????

4 stroke outboards......Actual for that matter, does it really matter what oil is used when a person changes oil?????

I have both.......60/40 Mercury, 2 stoke and 8 HP Yamaha 4 stoke........

Walmart has the best price I can find, in a retail store........for the 2 stroke...

Yes it does matter, because if Doc has his oil injection system set for E-Tec synthetic oil it will run at much leaner ratios than a typical outboard, other low cost oils are designed to run at 50:1

He can reset the computer to run other oils, but if he wants it set for the leaner ratios used for E-Tec oil, that's what he needs to run.

short answer, yes it matters if you care about the life of the outboard or machine.

If a guy doesnt understand what recycled, short chain, synthetic, zinc percentage, viscosity spread, percentage sulphuric ash, flash temp etc mean to oil than he could probably use a primer in marine trailer bearing grease bases as well. I dont mean to be a smart ass and but theres a world of difference between Texacos short polymere recycled oil they sell at the gas station and Amsoil or Mobile one (I use cheaper 4 stroke oils with similar characteristics like synthetic Castrol in my truck btw). For people that put serious hours on an engine, oil selection becomes a way to extend the life of the engine and save them money on equipment replacements. Quicky blackend oil or sludge on internal parts is the first sign of a crappy low temp oil. large bearing gaps leading to low oil pressure would be the next sign. In a two stroke its bearing slap and exhaust smoke. outboard motors are machines that rely solely on the gas mix oil to stop metal to metal contact and remove heat from the lower bearings. I have an optimax that uses merc DFI oil. If you look up the exact composition of that oil you can see why its more expensive. In comparison to my engines overall or rebuild cost the mix oil is relatively cheap IMO.

Doc---you still have your empty jugs? If so try Pickering Marine, they have a 55 gallon drum and you can fill your jugs from that. Was always the best price when I was runnin a 2 stroke. Yes he has the E-Tec oil

I found the same interesting thing when I switched from Bel Ray HR1 to Dumond synthetic in my dirt bikes. The Dumond leaned out the bikes by full jet sizes. Two stroke oils are not the same.

It does matter for the e-tec. According to every mechanic I've talked to when I had my e-tec. The variable oil injection system is pretty incredible. You use so little oil in an e-tec it has to be tuned precise I would imagine. Evinrude doesn't even recommend their "normal 2-stroke" oil in a pinch.

Hey Doc,
Running other brands of oil in the ETEC is penny-wise and, well, you know. Stick with HD-100.. 'nuff said.

Two options for reducing the cost of the oil.

One: as Bucket suggested keep your empty jugs and buy bulk from your dealer.

Two: If you're committed to your ETEC for the long-term as I am then consider the purchase of a 16 gallon drum. It will be the last time you'll have to think about oil for four years at your current useage and when it's empty you can refill it from your dealer's drum!
Think of it as one big jug!

This is a great time of year to get this done as most dealers have oil buying incentive programs around show season.

Good luck, T applause

I have no clue on this one. And I now own the same motor as you. I use yami oil but I have no clue if its any better or worse than anything else.

I just called 4 dealers in Western WA..........none carry in the 55 gallon drum........reason.........delivery cost, just not worth it.

So if you have empty containers, and find a place that sell your brand of oil...........BETTER BUY IT NOW......cause day of the bulk barrel is fast drawing to a close.........

Well worth the drive Aunty, Dudley is the best service guy I've ever come across. The best part is----he's fair and honest!

This was the best price I could come with a while back. http://www.domo-online.com/evinrudexd100 Check shipping against each other however. Odering multiple cases gets it down a bit too!

R W B nailed it, that's where I purchased mine last year. Last spring it was the best price I could find, it was about $32 last year, and with shipping it still makes it cheaper than most.
