I like to change up often to see what's working best for the conditions. I tend to fish ultra light, so I go with thinner blades that produce less drag. Sometimes I'll go with the big ford fender types, other times I think the fish (at least the bigger smarter ones) keep their distance, and a more subtle approach works better - like dragging a fly or small rapala.

I normally do not use pop gear.

I don't think the choice of blades is as important as what you are offering behind the blades.

I only use pop gear on lakes that are either very stained or if nothing else is working, as a last resort.

I know you are supposed to use silver blades for clear water and copper/gold colored blades for water that is dark or turbid. wink

Pop Gear? Pop Gear used to live down by Seatac twenty years ago! He tied some of the ugliest flies you've ever seen. He had a nice wife. Ugly gal, but one hell of a cook.
