Awesome pics & links! Yep Hawaii took 1st w/ Kai Lenny & France 2nd & 3rd LOL. Never tried standup paddle but intrigued! Kai Lenny's little brother trips me out...what is he 10...12? A future force no doubt! Standup is a young guys sport it seems. Keep up the videos they're great!

I have this savings account that I use for toys. This spring I have to make a decision between a Traeger Grill or getting a SUP. It is going to be a tough call. I like the SUP idea, because here in WA being out of the water will allow you to wear a lot lighter suit, then again Traegers are awesome.

I have a Hurley 6/5/4 and it feels like wearing a suit of armor. I hate it.

Also, most SUPs, come with a mast bolt insert so you can slap a sail on it when the waves are blown out. This would mean I could go to the beach with one board and have fun no matter what. Which is important since, I really can't plan my life around conditions, mostly just around work/family/etc. Plus I already have a bunch of windsurfing gear.

two things. Dont you dare say that anything having to do with surfing is a young mans sport. Kelly Slater is pushing 40 and STILL winning WOLRD TITLES. My chiropractor (Dr. Rob Harris) is Over 40 and rips HARDER than most people i know. The two oldest men ive seen surfing were 80 years on a longboard and 72 on a stand up.

Now that being said i will say that surfing is and always will be an "in shape " or "likes to excercise" "or can excercise without dying" persons game. If your getting soggy around the midsection , or youve kept your christmas weight...from '82...then yes you are going to have more difficulty. Easily solved with ANY exercise.90% of what Kelly mostly does, is strength yoga and resistance/ball excercises for his fitness. no gym, no weights. Or just go out and surf. SUP is ALOT of Core and leg balancing. some lunges and a few sit-ups and your golden.

number two is for Rocket Red. Your question has an answer. What will you get the most use and pleasure out of.... do you find yourself 3 (or more) times a week wnting to go out and paddle board? Do you live close or are willing to drive the distance to use the paddle board? Do you have a friend/partner to paddle with? a few very important questions. If you said "no" to any of these my two cents would be to ....get the grill. Unless you live somewhere where its feasible to go on a whim ( the mother of all needs when it comes to a hobby) it will probably collect dust brutha

Nah surfing is not a young mans sport. Also have seen many 60+ out surf everyone around & even know a woman who surfed the day she gave birth...up until she left for the hospital...a Kahanamoku though so...that's a given. You're right if surfings not for the young stand up paddle probably isn't either. Never tried it...just going on those who made the cut. Still real new & maybe just the young generation is interested. I know if I was there I probably wouldn't be doing it. Even with a Christmas gut can always jump on the long board!

I stand corrected 4 sure....

That is kind of the point of the SUP. I mean I used to go to the beach with a crew of guys every week between Memorial and Labor Day, with a few weekdays thrown in during vacations or whatever. We have all kind of stopped doing that due to responsibilities/marriage/kids/etc. I, however, still have the itch to go do these things and they don't. I am an hour (max) from surfing, and my parents live at the beach. The SUP would give me the option of putting the board on my car and going for a morning (pre-work) paddle somewhere in the sound, or an evening sail at Potlatch, or even let me do a dawn patrol for SRCs/rezzies along some beaches (that would be fun).

Then again, I have a backyard pool, and we have parties break out all summer long. I can guarantee the Traeger would see equal or more use.

I only have one beach buddy currently. He is the guy that lives in my Sister and brother in law's basement. He is a little flakey at best. The best surf is usually early before the summer NW wind picks up, and he is usually 70-100% in the bag at the hour we should be leaving.

I am going to keep thinking about this one.

Only someone who never surfed would think surfin is gay

Beachboys came to concert in Hawaii when I was in highschool. Bought tickets, worked for a month+ on an old car to get it working so we could all go. On the ride home my passenger decideds to climb out the window & surf on the hood which inspired my other passenger to climb out the window & surf on the roof. Got pulled over by a lady cop going down Kalanianaole Hwy, showed her my drivers permit & she was not impressed. "When someone climbs on your hood or your roof, you should pull over." Funny never thought of that - The beachboys although they seemed old were AWESOME!

OK, I am impressed. Totally mysterious. How do they not have their feet glued to the board when they fly up a wave and flip back down?

its all physics....it looks scientifically impossible....it doesnt feel that way though. it happens SO fast you dont really have time to think.

blue water pro -HAHAHAHAHAAHAHA ive heard more stories on the kalanianiole Hwy than any other. its the only highway of any length that is like 45mph and people go slower....so i suppose you could get away with alot more. very funny though. cops out here can be extreme...either way...lenient to the max or "haole hating" cuff you for littering.

Kekoa Cazimero thumbs

Cops in Hawaii were extreme jerks when I was growing up. A few friends grew up to be cops --so with any hope it's getting better.

Kekoa is a pretty solid guy. started a non-profit to get a friend (girl) to nationals when she lost her sponsor 4 weeks before the comp. Very humble. my chiro is friends with him and ive talked to him every now and then...

yeah ive heard its gotten better...more diversification. really i laugh. the asians are OVER-RUNNING this place. yet they hate whitey for ( on paper) taking over the islands..but in real life..the asians are breeding them out, and own 85 something % of the land thats available?!?!?!?!.it is a mystery to me. i got nothing against asians..im no racist...just a realist...they cant drive worth a ****. Add that to the fact that per capita i guarentee you we have the highest population of OLD (60+) asian's actually DRIVING...GOODNIGHT!!!! yet i only see them pulled over when they've gotten in an accident ( literally, 4 times a week i see). i have 2 friends i surf with that are 39+ aged HPD cops. coolest guys i know. but they even tell me its still really bad. whatever. honestly...its worth it all. this place rocks smile how did you move back?

Stick with the not racist...forget about it...ALL of it.. when you give it up...you'll see another side...really seriously not deep rooted in the people of Hawaii.

Great shots, that headcam thing is sweet. I agree with you wholeheartedly about the confusion with regard to who gets hassled...I think its just a general sentiment that is leftover from different days before 85% of the island was asian-owned. I only got hassled by drunk Hawaiians, and that was usually around Waikiki when I went there occasionally to go to Moose's or some other bar. Parts of Hawaii I miss, most things I dont though. I definitely miss being in the water and living the aloha lifestyle...2 very very cool things to get to do in life.

keep the shots coming Merg...oh and shoots, you owe me a triple overhead air-drop while wearing that headcam brah. wink

nah...i give respect to the hawaiians and locals alike...i can surf this whole island because i know when to say.." yeah, no problem bruddah" and do what they say. You have to know your place...and hawaii aint the U.S. you may think it is...but it aint. So you use your head and swallow your pride. its all good anyhow.
