German Brown trout, that is.

I am looking through the plant plan, and I notice that there is an absence of mature (catchable) brown trout in my area. I see where fry are planted in some Thurston County lakes, but no catchables.

Anybody have any ideas as to why they are planting the fry, but not the catchables? Thanks in advance.

The only browns I have caught were in Pass lake, Green Lake (King County), and a secret lake in Eastern WA. Cool looking fish, just would like to get more chances to catch them.

Dogfish,

I believe WFG stocks fry for the following year in lakes that have a positive/rapid growth rate. I might be wrong, but that's the answer I have been told.

Dogfish, if you don't mind the drive Sliver Lake down here in Pierce Co. has quite a few Brown trout in it and if you want to make a weekend of it there is a small resort there. You can either throw up a tent or they do have a few RV spots also available. Last year opening day I caught three, the smallest was about 14 inches the largest was 22 inches. There are also boat rentals and a large fishing dock if you want to bring the kids along.

I forgot about Silver, it's been a few years since I hit the browns down there. The best fishing I had was in Sept. / Oct. I would cast an elk hair caddis to rising fish and they would turn right around and smack it. Caught & released all afternoon. I got a lot of stares from people that had been out all day with little to show for their efforts.

Yea the first Brown I caught there was about the middle of Oct, also caught on a fly although I cound't tell you what kind since I don't fly fish.(Plan on changing that this year). I caught him on spinning gear with a clear bobber and small black fly reeling in real slow. There are still a lot of them in there. I belive they raise them right there at the lake in thier own fish pens. It's still a pretty good lake to fish after opening day. Opening day weekend it's a Zoo!

FYI - There are browns in Lake Wilderness in Maple Valley and Lake McMurray in Skagit County. Usually best time to catch them is right after dark.

FishMute8: The resort owner, George Henley used to raise the browns in cooperation with the state. He charges a nominal lauch feel for tubes / pontoons and has a small store selling his Henley Special. That bobber and fly technique can be very effective.
