When we were out at Neah Bay we used white grubs/worms and knocked'em dead
for lings, sea bass, halibut, and rockfish.

Does any one know if these also work in lakes for trout?

I am going to give them a shot during the opener.

I don't know about trout but they're great for Bass.

i use 2" curltailed plastics on a small jighead for perch at certain lakes in the summer months and i get a trout every now and then using that. i like white or yellow the best. smelly jelly works good on soft plastics too if you like that stuff.

I've heard of tube worms working well in lakes and rivers for lakers, rainbow, and cutthroat (probalby browns as well). Since many tube worms are meant to look like bait fish or even crawfish, then you just need to present them as such. For immitating crawfish, browns and orange shades probably work best - hopping along near the bottom. And the fun part is, you never know when you get that hit, it the fish is a small mouth, large mouth, or a trout.

I also know that sluggos (sp??) - a soft plastic bass bait that mimics bait fish - work well for silvers in salt and fresh water. Shades of white, green and chartruse seem to work best. Again, think of the bait fish you are trying to represent...

And I know of folks who use various types and colors of plastic grubs and worms for targeting chinook and chum in rivers. Of course the pink worm is a favorite for steelhead and some like it for coho. This is definately an area that is fun to experiment with. Sometimes you just need to show the fish something a little different, and coming up with your own color, style, presentation, combo (try a worm tail hangin off your siwash hook on your spinners) can be very rewarding.

Right on! Thanks for the info. I can't wait to try one on this weekend. The lake I will be fishing has pretty stained water so I think the white/glow worm will really contrast the water good and get the fish's attention.

I gave the white grub the ol' college try this weekend to no avail. I was experiencing lock jaw big time both Saturday and Sunday. Was it just me or was this opener slower than usual? I will try them again later in the season.

What else did you try?

The action was pretty good on Pine Lake.

What size grubs were you using? Did you add any scent?

You might also try adding a small chunk of night crawler to the hook. When we were slow trolling our john's jigs tipped with worms, every other hit about pulled the rod out of my hands.

We pitched gold Kastmasters, trolled orange Powerbait, and pulled some Flatfish's. All of these worked to some extent just not as good as last year.

When I went to Sportco to buy white worms/grubs they were really hard to find, sold out. That tells me they must work good. I had to settle for some Uncle Mike's white squid jigs. If I could have bought some white Powerworms I think I would have done better.
