Hey anyone here wanna teach a 15 year old how to flyfish? I'd love to learn. I'll buy any flies, leaders, and tippet size you tell me I need before i go. I have floating line and a 6 wt. Martin.

BBVD,

Are you a kid? If you're the beginning fly fisherman, you have some good lakes to learn on down by you.

One opens up in June and is fun fishing. I think it's made for fly fishing.

Yeah I went out to deep lake and caught my very first wild fish on a fly. used a green woolly bugger off floating line. that was great... a whole 6 inches of fish.

My might also try the White River, if its open for Dolly Varden, catch and release, or the Green River. Good Luck

I would use either a black wooley bugger as a searching pattern, or a elk hair caddis if you want to fish a dry fly. As far as your fly being swept down stream, this isn't a bad thing. There's a technique called the wet fly swing which is basically casting up and across stream and letting your fly drift with the current until it is directly down stream from you. Depending on the current speed you may need to mend your flyline as it drifts down. Hope this helps.

Before you head out to a lake or river, be sure you learn how to cast. It's really discouraging when you are out there on the water and having to constantly untangle your leader, tippet, and fly. You might think of getting Joan Wulff's video(s) on fly casting. Her's are definitely some of the best. Though I'm basically self taught, after having seen her "Dynamics of Flycasting," I have to recommend it. It certainly improved my casting after watching it. Outside of that, find a long stretch of lawn to practice on. Do a little every day, and, after a little while, you'll get the hang of it. Without practice, it'll be a lot of frustration and no fish. It's been a little over two years for me, and I can tell you that practice does make perfect.

Hey Steve (I think)... Thanks a bunch! I'll be sure to try this out! It sounds a lot like that drifting technique used for salmon and steelhead.
Ceviche... I'm luckier then most. My parents bought a farm 7 years back, and it happens to have a pond on it. The property is great for hunting in the winter... But during the summer, we wanted to do somethin with that pond. Me and my brother stocked it with about 30 triploids from a U-Fish and they've survived pretty well. I have probably put more hours in the last 5 months I've had my flyrod into that pond then I have into homework... Which is a lot.
Thank you guys very much though this is very helpful. I'm always all ears to anyones flyfishing testimony.
