So me and a few buddies are going to saddle up and go look for some action out East. A road trip I've never made but one that I've always sworn to getting around to.

We've got our room booked and boat loaded with all types of gear. Side drifting, bobber and a few other tactics we're looking to try...

Any tips on general vicinity? I've explored some maps and have some general ideas but with 3 days of fishing, we're looking to make the best of it... PM's welcome...

If your taking a sled, be careful. There are some rocks just under the surface (depending on flow) that can get you. Not trying to discourage you but I went with a friend who had hundreds of days on the water and he once found a rock that he'd never seen before. I have fished below Dworshak and done well.

Good luck and have fun.

That is so very true. You are going to hit a rock sometime , It`s just a matter of when. I have fished it for several years and I still manage to find rocks that I never knew where there. When you do hit it can cause extensive damage . There are alot of boats that have been damaged beyond repair. JUST BE VERY CAREFUL and have a good time it is beautiful over there. Friday nights the primerib at the casino is great and they also have a awesome breakfast.

You can fish below Dworshak Hatchery and catch them all day this time of year.... South fork aswell.
I'd say do the trip, but then definitely GO back next year in September-October to see what the Clearwater is really like. Easily one of my favorite rivers in the Pacific NW in the Fall.

Head to the SF. Just look for the staging pre-spawners and hook hatchery B-runs to your heart's content. And since you have a thing for unclipped hatchery fish, your suspicions will be corroborated by the 75% unclipped Nez Pierce hatchery steelhead. Check the dorsal fins on those fish with adipose present. The fish will be easy to find. Just look for all the other boats and fishermen. It's not known for its wilderness quality. But if it's numbers you want, you'll find them.

Watch the flows. The levels determine much of where to run. There is a reason there are a number of "launches" the tailouts keep you from running through the tailouts--the bedrock blends in well (blackish) and not as obvious. Fish a run hard if it doesnt pan out. Pull the boat out and go fish another run. On the Clearwater I have put in and taken out as many as 3 times.

The Snake has some Big rapids-lots of volume. Going up take em slow and work your way through them.

Get your sandshrimpers on this side. Eggs and prawns work well too.

Have fun!

The locals there do not think highly of our way of side drifting there river. They do not like the "fish one hole load your sled up" and go fish three others. They think we catch all the biters out of the hole and leave nothing for them. We were greated at camp cabin and home by the owner of the store and told this. We put the boat in at the pink house only to come back two hours later to find two tires on the boat trailer had been flattened. There are alot of fish there really is nothing to have 40 fish day. The fish quality is nothing to write home about. good luck.

Those fish passed your neighborhood 6 or 7 months ago. Aren't they getting ready to spawn? smile

Good luck.

Guess we'll deal with that as it develops... Assuming the fish are there and conditions are right...

What do you think?

Pretty much the same thing as keeping a winter fish in December or January. Body fat is very similar if you think about it....

Just curious Keith, do what ever floats your bobber.

I live over here and I see guy's that bring in these fish after smoking them......the meat is one shade darker than white. The flesh of these fish are sub par.

But the guy's over here fish with jigs tipped with shrimp. Most never see these fish in there prime like you do.

If you have a recipe that makes these fish edible please share. smile

Just a few smoking recipes that are dynomite but as you mentioned, I'm not really into eating much of it myself if any but have plenty of neighbors and friends always begging who won't know the difference..

Heck, I very well could chunk it up for dog food... My lab loves fresh cooked coho and winter steelhead.... Reminds me of a woodpecker on a rot log when he's digging in and he really could care less if it were a carp...

Hey BD, when we going again?

Here is a story. Two high school friends got invited by a guy from Boise with a sled. They plan their trip for 6 months. They day finally arrives, they launch the sled, run 500 yards from the launch, hit a rock, and punch a hole in their boat. My two friends start bailing and to hear their story, are lucky to be alive. Within 15 minutes the trip is over. One of the friends that experienced this went with Ironhead and it was a completly different situation. The dude knows the river, how to run a boat there, and how to catch fish.

Live here and fished it today. Don't bother with the south fork as its a clusterf@ck of fly guys using 15ft long leaders and beads......... Sidedrift the main with eggs especially around the hatchery if you want lots of fish. Fish quality is booty to slightly less booty by wetside standards. Some hens are dumping eggs while others will make you some springer baits and some great smoked fish for the neighbor you don't like. The bucks are in the same shape, some will bust all over your boat and others won't.
