Steelhead don't spit.

Todd, I don't think that setup would work. You'll probably never land a fish like that.

AP likes his that way also.

I have been setting mine up like this, mainly because I am lazy, but it seems to work about as well as anything else.

You get two different actions, depending whether or not you put the swivel on the back.

I initially did it several years ago to see if it would help keeping fish hooked, and for coho, it definitely helped. For steelhead, it didn't seem to matter on the hookup to land ratio...both worked fine.

You get a little more of a "rolling" action...hard to explain. With the swivel you won't get as deep, to my eyes, as with the hook hard connected via split ring on the back. Sometimes it works better, sometimes it doesn't work as well. It definitely helps me hook fish in the jaw more than the roof of the mouth, though I hook them in both spots with both rigs...just tends to hook them in the jaw more with the swivel on the back.

The swivel rig will tend to foul on your line more...and any time you add another "thing" onto your rig, it's another thing to go wrong...ask Ryley, he had one bust the swivel in half out on the coast with me a few weeks ago, but I think it was a bum swivel...however, if there's no swivel there, then there's no chance for a bum swivel to be there.

Just another tool in the box...

Fish on...

Todd
