Hopefully there is minimal loss of life, but from the video I just saw, the death toll will be pretty high. I hope I'm wrong.

This could be ugly in Tokyo.

NW coast now added to the Advisory list.............
...THE TSUNAMI ADVISORY IS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE COASTAL AREAS OF WASHINGTON - BRITISH COLUMBIA AND ALASKA FROM THE OREGON-WASHINGTON BORDER TO CHIGNIK BAY ALASKA...
RECOMMENDED ACTIONS A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED WHICH IS EXPECTED TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE WARNING AND/OR ADVISORY REGIONS LISTED IN THE HEADLINE. PERSONS IN LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS SHOULD BE ALERT TO INSTRUCTIONS FROM THEIR LOCAL EMERGENCY OFFICIALS. EVACUATIONS ARE ONLY ORDERED BY EMERGENCY RESPONSE AGENCIES. - PERSONS IN TSUNAMI WARNING COASTAL AREAS SHOULD MOVE INLAND TO HIGHER GROUND. - PERSONS IN TSUNAMI ADVISORY COASTAL AREAS SHOULD MOVE OUT OF THE WATER... OFF THE BEACH AND OUT OF HARBORS AND MARINAS.
From the pics we're seeing I wouldn't want to mess around with this one!

ETA for Wa coast 0715. ETA for Hawaii 0500. Just heard on KOMO radio they are starting to evacuate Westport and Long Beach area (Pacific Co). Advisory for most of Wa coast but a watch for Or/Wa border area. 1-10 feet-Hopefully 1 foot and a non-event! Pacific County officials are recommending residents move to high ground in response to a tsunami spawned Friday by the largest earthquake in Japan's history: Pacific County recommends residents move to high ground

My baby sister and her husband live in Tokyo right next to the water. Around 11pm last night phones calls started coming in from family wondering who had talked to who. Luckily both are OK and recouping from the tramatic event.
My sister was on ground level when the big one hit. She was afraid to go into her building as it was swaying pretty wildly. That and her husband was stuck at work with no way home due to the trains being shut down. Got an email this morning that both are OK and have found each other.
The Japanese people are accustomed to withstanding a little ground shaking now and then. Even the children seem very nonchalant about events that would make someone from the midwest piss their pants. When you see the Japanese children crying and worried, you know this one is something different.
They both stressed things are crazy in Tokyo but much, much worse futher north. They have many friends who still have not made contact with family and loved ones up north.
Thoughts and prayers to those in search of family and loved ones.

Thanks Todd.
Scary moments last night for sure.
Japan is a, if not one of the most, resilient countries in the world. Digging out of disaster is nothing new to them.
Just hope this lastest historical event didn't cost the country too much in the way of human life.

If there's any good news about this, it's that the death toll has not exceeded the order of hundreds as yet, which seems almost miraculous to me after watching the live footage of the tsunami moving inland last night (and considering the population density of Japan). It was horrific. The last time I watched something on TV that made me feel that way was 9/11. I fully expected that we would be talking about thousands upon thousands of deaths.
And yes, as secondary in importance as it seems right now, this will not do much good for the world economy. For now, let's count our blessings and hope our coastline doesn't sustain any serious damage. Just read one report that said there was to the tune of 80,000 people missing? But who knows what's truth and what's not. That's some wild stuff over there... Keith

Aberdeen is still here. No issues on the coast.
We had Japanese exchange students every so often at our house while I was growing up. We still stay in touch with a few. Dad is part of the Olympia Sister City program with Kato (Yashiro), so he is trying to contact the folks he knows. I'll let him know about texting. Kato is right on the east coast about 180 miles south of Sendai.

Todd I know my mom has been able to text with her OK. Last night while the quake was in progress she was able to get through to her on the phone. She was freaking out and barely able to stay on her feet. My mom could hear the rumble through the phone. Completely surreal. Haven't had any of my texts to her answered as of yet but I know she has been trying to get through and know as of this morning she is OK and with her husband.

According to this article, the Japanese quake caused the length of a day to decrease by 1.6 microseconds. They attribute it to an increase in the earth's mass. Someone is going to have to explain that one to me. How did the mass increase? Nothing is missing, just moved around. Do we have a physicist in the house?
Japan quake causes day to get a wee bit shorter Published March 11, 2011 | Associated Press Print Email Share Comments (1) Text Size WASHINGTON – You won't notice it, but the day just got a tiny bit shorter because of Friday's giant earthquake off the coast of Japan. NASA geophysicist Richard Gross calculated that Earth's rotation sped up by 1.6 microseconds. That's because of the shift in Earth's mass caused by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake. A microsecond is one-millionth of a second. That change in rotation speed is slightly more than the one caused by last year's larger Chile earthquake. But 2004's bigger Sumatra earthquake caused a 6.8-microsecond shortening of the day. The Japan quake is the fifth strongest since 1900.

Does that work for or against eliminating daylight savings time?
I may have to upgrade my alarm clock to account for that.

The ship I was on was homeported in Yokosuka and I was curious how the Navy's facilities did so I checked the Navy Times. There are 8 Navy vessels on the way to Japan to assist and besides the carrier Ronald Reagan, sent some amphibious and dock landing ships which is good as one of the problems in Haiti was access to unload since the dockage had been severly damaged. It sounds like the 38,000 + military folks we have stationed in Japan are ok. Mooring lines on two attack subs in Guam were snapped but tugs got the subs back to the dock safely. More here: http://www.navytimes.com/news/2011/03/navy-sends-8-ships-tsunami-relief-031111w/On the way from patroling the coast of Viet Nam heading back to Japan, we had to run from a typhoon when it took a turn toward. Big seas and we took a 48 degree roll at one point. To surf down a big wave in a 250 ft ship is jaw clenching. I just can not fathom being on a ship and encountering a wave the size of the ones resulting from this quake.

For those interested in the impact of the tsunami on natural resources it apparently killed quite a few of albatross chick, and probably other seabirds, on nesting islands out in the Pacific.

Port of Newport just shut down again... Much larger waves which impacted Hawaii around noon have people here a bit nervous. Old man just launched the sled to do a little crabbing only to have the harbor master refund his launch and tell him to pull it back out...

This should be a reality check, the quake in Japan happened in a subduction zone located 70 miles offshore. The Cascadia subduction zone is located 80 miles off the Oregon coast, this is what we are potentially looking at happening right here.

Find a copy of Curt Gentry's "Last Days of the Late Great State of California". Even though it was written something like 40 years ago it is pretty interesting when it has a 'quake destroy CA. And then looks at the impact that would cause the US.

This should be a reality check, the quake in Japan happened in a subduction zone located 70 miles offshore. The Cascadia subduction zone is located 80 miles off the Oregon coast, this is what we are potentially looking at happening right here. Lots of info out there to read about, some of it really can grab ya and get ya thinking... Odd to think that one article said there's a high percentage chance that we could have a quake of the same magnitude off Southern Oregon/Northern California within 50 years resulting in a similar type tsunami... Hard to beleive it will happen here, someday....
I wonder how far it would make it into Forks assuming it was a 25-30 footer?

Forks altitude at the airport is 299' Oh........ What if a 350' wave came? Keith Then most of Washington's population would be in dire straights. Not too likely to happen, but................

Pop a couple of Iodine pills and you'll be fine. Better get those iodine pills pronto. I was in a health supplements store today and they were talking about a shortage of kelp tablets around town. Might be easier to find old school okie drifters than iodine supplements in a few days.

Sure was interesting watching the weather forecast last night. They showed more about the jet stream from Japan to Oregon than the actual weather... Will be interesting to see what shakes out... Keith

Radiation would have to be distributed into the upper atmosphere to make it's way from Japan all the way to Washington, or anywhere on the US west coast across the Pacific. Not likely to happen ....even with a total meltdown.
