friday while going over white pass a group of what i think are dall sheep ran across the highway in front of us. there was five or six of which four were rams. i didn't get a good look at the others. two of the ram were shooters the biggest huge. we were 10 to 15 miles before the elk feed station before the highway comes out of the timber. i tried to take a picture but will have to see if it turns out. i have seen rocky mountain sheep and these are not them. has anyone heard of dall sheep in that area? after looking at picture of different sheep they were not dall sheep

Never.

Are you sure they weren't Mountain Goats?

Dahl sheep, as in white sheep?

.....or bighorn?

I've been putting in for a bighorn hunt for years.

I have too. I also follow a particualr herd yearly and dream of the day I can take such a magnificent animal.

I also have not seen a major color phase change in BH Sheep between the seasons. At least not even to the degree of what a Mule Deer looks like in spring vs. summer.

Interesting to see a pic....even if not that great'a pic.

The southern end of the Dall Sheep's range is northern BC.

They were probably "Big Horn Sheep," of which there are a handful of subspecies throughout the west.

As a kid we used to load up and head to the feeding station to check out the elk and sheep up close, pretty cool to see. Here's a link to Oak Creek www.nachesvalleychamber.com/info/elkfeeding.html

The Dall Sheep are what is called "thinhorn"; the horns are not a massive and flare wider than the bighorn. Now recognized as two species.

I think the Dall (white) and Stone (dark) are the two races of thinhorn. The bighorn has at least the Rocky Mountain, California, and Desert.

Impessive animals wherever one sees them.

we went over to that feeding station. the sheep were up high there. i went and looked at a picture of the stone sheep and the horns on them look a lot like the horns on the sheep i saw. will big horn horns flair out like that?

We only have 2 sub species of sheep here in WA., the Rocky mt(which they only give one permit for) and the Calif. bighorn sheep,(whose horns do flare a little, more than the Rocky's) Have been applying for 15 yrs( have 13 preference points) to be able to hunt these. Can't wait!

I've never heard of sheep crossing the road before. Not saying they don't. But I grew up in Yakitraz and while the sheep feeding station on 410 has sheep coming down off the Mtn, I've never seen them cross any road. Neither in the Ellensburg canyon. I believe you, but would love to see pic's.

California big horn are what live in the NAches area. My hunting partner drew one of the three tags in the state last year for that area(out of 6000 apps). Pretty cool hunt, we scouted the first two days and he filled his tag on the first morning. Tryin to find pics ill post later if I locate.

There were some really big sheep shot in WA last year two possible records from what Im told.

Seem 'em crossing the road in the Grande Ronde canyon...and the ones at Spence's Bridge seem to spend more time standing in the road than anything else!

Fish on...

We have California big horn around our summer steelhead haunts on the Deschutes River.
It's an amazing sight. Often you will hear them sidehilling through the shale first.
Then it's quite a thrill to watch them deftly work their way down to water.
