Jon,

Are you saying the abandoned logging road that runs next to the wilderness
border no longer exists. Used to be a person could run a motorcycle up that
road to a culvert that drains from one of the Granites.... then it was a hike up
the hill to the lakes.

I could believe that the road isn't a road anymore. Last I heard it was trenched,
but a person could get across that. This road was outside the wilderness
boundary and used to log up in the area.

Anyways, congrats on the hike.

Zen,

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. I've been out of town and off the net for awhile.

The deterioration of the road in the last 10 years is mind boggling, due to a complete lack of maintenance and very little use. After the first mile and a half it's just a trail, and not a road in any sense. Culverts or bridges in both creek crossings are long gone, and the first creek crossing is frankly dangerous.

Having said that, the only other sign of recent use was that of a trail bike. Whoever did it had their work cut out for them navigating the deadfall across the trail/road and the first creek crossing. Whoever it was didn't try the second creek crossing and it looks like they made camp in the road bed itself just before it.

Nature has really been at work on the old road, it will be interesting to see it again in another 10 years at the present level of light use and no maintenance.
