Anyone done it? The wife and I are heading out there for a few days next week, and I plan to give a try. Are any beaches better than the others?

Yes. Lots of times.

Beach 4 is the best, look for a lot of asian people as they typically have the area dialed.

When I was younger you could fish any beach there and do well. While I still try every time we go they are smaller and there are not nearly as many as 15 years ago. Beach 4 and 6 offer your best chance. Lots of fun when you find a big school.

As an ASIAN, I would have to say RR may have hit the nail on the head! LOL

Actually, if you want to get specific, it's Filipinos! I go with one of my best friends and his family, they have that fishery dialed in!

We usually fish Beach 1 or 2 and the beach at the campground.

Try it out! Good luck!

LOL thanks for the clarification (and hope I didn't offend), and I knew I was using a blanket term and almost typed "Southeast Asians". I didn't know how to write that sentence without being offensive, but the simple fact is that there are some folks down there who do 10x the amount of catching of everyone else.

I just wanted the original poster to get the best info available.

i can't say much for kalaloch(i don't get up there that often) but i was doing really good in the copalis beach area this spring. seemed like i finally figured them out a bit better, i have much better success using raw prawn chunks for bait instead of clam necks like the past few years.

i usually rig up a double hook surf rig, weight on the bottom with one baited hook and the other with a 1" bright pink or orange plastic grub. if one steals the bait and i miss him, there's still a chance to hook him on the rubber worm.

There are a few out there that won't stop at limit on a good day, and size is no matter. For the most part these are good fishermen and they follow the law. Most bring their lunch and their families and make it a great day on the beach. My wife's favorite fish is the red tailed surf perch so I go to the beach prepared to stay the day and do stay daylight to dark if need be. I'm there to catch a limit. Some days are very long, others only take a few hours. Stop by and say hello, I'm normally friendly..........Pescadot wannabe chamorro.......Hafa adia

Neal,

I don't believe there is a minimum size on them. It really is a hoot when you get into a school of them. Tasty too.

Any substantial sandy beach on the WA coast will provide opportunity. My favorite area is Grayland because it's closest to me as much as anything.

I prefer fishing lighter spinning gear for them but that's just me. You get two 2-3lb fish on at the same time(assuming a tandem hook set-up) and it's almost like fighting a steelhead.......speaking of which, I landed a 6lb hatchery summer run perch fishing 2 summers ago, about 40 ft from shore and right in the froth! Any spinning rod that will fling 1/2 to 1oz of lead is really all you need. The guys that use 11 ft. broomsticks usually require a little more weight.

Fresh sandshrimp have always been my #1 bait. Raw prawns work & clam necks are a distant 3rd. I've yet to explore small jigs as described above but that's on the to-do list.

If you want more specifics PM me.

use this when you are in the middle of a hot perch bite and you cast your bait off - "Kainin mo tae ko!"
this when you cast and your weight goes flying off - "Anak ng tinapa!"
and this when you drop your pliers in the water - "kantutin mo ang nanay mo!"

Chum Man, was that you we saw floating by in the surf's edge a couple weeks ago north of the casino?
