Because Medicare and SS comprise a large % of the federal budget. Foreign aid, like even the smallest budge line item, is significant, but eliminating any of those lesser items doesn't really do much overall. The big 3 are medicare, SS, and Defense. You have to cut one or more of those to make a noticeable dent.

The monthly tax revenue is enough to pay SS, Medicare, the military, and interest on the debt then it starts getting shaky. This is BS issue that is being run up the pole by both parties as they continue their little pissing match as federal spending needs to stay around 20% GDP and taxes adjusted. ( the prez likes around 23% ) Taxes ideally need to go back to the level of the Clinton presidency along with spending adjusted for inflation but both sides are to busy putting out garbage prop up this idiotic system we have now..

BO is showing that he knows how to manage a issue to get re elected but not exactly leading the way out of the darkness so to speak. Some say let the crap fly now as the spending will continue to the bloody assholes to break the economy and it will just happen down the road.
