I like the idea, (I really do) but would that only limit those who personally have deep pockets to run for office?

The petition has just been released, and apparently the traffic is shutting down the server repeatedly...stick with it, and you'll get a chance to sign.

Nothing of substance will ever change so long as money and corporations own all the politicians from both parties.

Publicly funded, and they all get the same amount.

Neat idea. Unfortunately, it won't work. Supreme Court has already ruled that campaign contributions are "speech" protected by the Constitution. You can't circumvent that ruling by simply putting language in a law saying that contributions don't equal speech.

I just signed it, it took a bit for the server to not error when entering the site, or when voting signing, but it did finally capture my vote 'signature'.

I have never understood how campaign contributions could be considered free speech, when all it really is, is payola. Don't DJ's get jailed for payola?

I couldn't get on the site to see that. Still, seems like a nice pipe dream, considering you would need two thirds of the Senate and two thirds of the House of Representatives to pass it or two thirds of the various state legislatures. I can't see politicians ever doing this. Even if they wanted to, these guys couldn't get together to get anything done.

State legislatures should have no problem with it...it wouldn't affect their abilities to be bought and paid for, just the federal candidates.

"I'm" not including anyone, as I didn't write it...but I'd say it would clearly prohibit that, too.

LOL falling on the floor....hahahahahahaha

Warren Buffett had a great idea...do not allow a politician to run for reelection unless the budget is balanced.

Public financing would be taxpayer funding and probably would be an ok idea except it costs too much to advertise to the morons.

public financing only benefits the incumbent. The media with the exception of fox is totally in the tank for democrats. Democrats challenged two hosts on KVI a few years back for the value of on air contributions. Just enough to shut them up for the election. The hosts won the court decision.

The money is a problem when you can filter foreign money into the campaigns. Its also a problem when someone from outside the state can donate a lot of money to a candidate.

The only problem I see is that it doesn't specifically call for the public funding of Federal elections, which is exactly what is required to eliminate money from politics.

Come now. That reply was weak. And you know it. You can do better than that.

How about making it illegal for any government or grant-funded employee to donate to campaign funds?

NOTE: that wouldn't be an issue for Seattle or San Francisco as they are only interested in "free" (see tipping thread)

That reply was tongue-in-cheek and it's not surprising it sailed over your head...you progressives were born without funnybones.

Point taken. My bad for not seeing the little smiley face in your post.

How about an ammendment to choose Reps at random from a pool of qualified candidates. One term only then back home you go. No pension. No Med benni's for life. A nice plaque if you like but you can take your Federal experience and apply it at the State or local level if you still want to "serve".
