OLYMPIA - Anglers looking for a late-season opportunity to catch large cutthroat trout might want to cast a line in Munn Lake, just outside the Tumwater city limits.

Four hundred hatchery-raised cutthroat, each weighing about 2 pounds, were planted in the small lake today by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

"These fish were raised specifically to be used for this kind of late-season fishing opportunity," said Larry Phillips, a WDFW fish biologist. "We want people to catch them, and they should have a good chance now that the water temperatures are dropping."

Phillips said WDFW will transport the lunkers from the Eells Springs trout hatchery on Hood Canal, where they were raised over the past two years. Munn Lake was chosen as a release site because it is small - just 34 acres - and close to a major population center, Phillips said.

"We don't want these fish to get lost," said Phillips, noting that the lowland lakes fishing season ends Oct. 31. "They're great fish and we want people to take advantage of this opportunity."
