This Pike was caught at Namur Lake in northern Alberta while I was fishing and photographing in September of 2010. We shot a few quick images and quickly released it so don't have a weight on it. I'd guess it is about XX lbs. The guy holding it is about 5'10" and the lens is at 18MM so there might be a slight distorsion by that, but it is still a large fish. I'd guess close to 50 inches, but what do you think?

Your friend needs to learn to use his arms to their full photographic potential. Those "alligator arms" have cost someone at least fifteen pounds in bragging rights. Judging from the size of the fish, I'd guess your friend weighs 190 pounds. Story problems never were my strong suit...

Nice fish BTW. Northern or Musky?

Up there, about 12 kilos. Down here, maybe 25 lbs

Here's one formula:

Northern Pike Weight

The formula to calculate the weight for a Northern Pike that is 40 inches long and has a girth of 20 inches is as follows. Northern Pike have a shape factor of 1000 and a girth ratio of (.52)

WEIGHT = LENGTH x GIRTH² / SHAPE FACTOR

WEIGHT= 40 x (20²) / 1000
WEIGHT= 40 x 400 / 1000
WEIGHT= 16000 / 1000
WEIGHT = 16.0 pounds
Please Note: A 40 inch pike might be thicker than normal and have a girth of 22 inches, which would make the fish 19.4 pounds.

Here's link to age/length/weight chart

http://www.practicalsportman.com/northern-pikefish-size-chart/
and a portion of the table.

NORTHERN PIKE
AVERAGE LENGTH AVERAGE
AGE Inches cm WEIGHT

20 40 101 21
21 41.5 105 23
22 43 109 25
23 44.5 113 28
24 46 117 31
25 46.7 118 32.5
26 47 119 34
27 47.5 120 35.5
28 48 122 37
29 48.5 123 38.5
30 49 124 40
30+ 49.5+ 124+ 40+

All I know is it's waaaay bigger than the biggest I got in the Yukon. This was one of the bigggest my friend who lives in TeslinL lake had ever seen. Those Alberta pike must be eating pretty dang good. My guess is yours weighed about 27 lbs.

I'd put it at somewhere between 25-30 pounds. Anyway it is the largest northern I have ever seen and was the biggest caught and released at the lodge that year.

I saw a photo of five fish several years ago taken by a USFW game warden friend that were caught in the Copper River system in Canada, while he and another warden were banding ducks up there. They were all as big as this fish, possibly larger.

I expect a lot of baby ducks came to a bad end on that river.

That's a fine photo of Mr. Vedder and fish.

Some were quite small. This little guy was the only one I took on a
fly. I only fly fished a few minutes on the trip, used jigs the rest of the time.

Hey, thanks for the kind words about my photos. I enjoy photographing fishing as
much as fishing, both of which I have been doing for a long time.
