Had a friend pulled over in Eastern Washington towing his boat, on I-90. He was doing what he thought was the speed limit, 70. The State Patrol gave him only a warning but if your towing a boat, no matter what size, you are suppose to go the truck limit at 60mph on the main freeways. I did not know that so beware heading to Potholes, that is where he got pulled over.

Remember the state is trying to find money anyway it can eek

I'll bet we get closer monitoring than the big truck rigs. What a stupid change.

Good info. I also understand that vehicles towing trailers are not allowed to use the far left lane on the interstate. I'm not sure, but I take that to mean the carpool lane, AND the fast lane.

closer monitoring than the big trucks?? I know a bunch of people that would argue that one with you.

When towing a trailer when there's 3 or more lanes of unrestricted travel in each direction you must stay out of the fast lane.

And the trailer law has been in place since they went to the split speed limit, can't remember how long ago that was but it was a while ago.

This topic seems to pop up on the different message boards about once a year.

Went past the Oly scales last month and there must have been 40 staters out there inspecting trucks. Had a truck in each lane with their creepers and mirrors out. Also had about 6 trucks just sitting. Bet they left with their wallets a little lighter.

Not to mention the 10 staters that were hanging around the cooler on the ground laughing and carrying on. Looked like a summer BBQ. Actually they could have been on break for all I know. They should think of how the public perceives them though when there's thousands of cars zipping by.

I was just glad I wasn't a truck heading northbound that day. eek

Oh well, I guess my ignorance was bliss. No more. I just hate getting stuck behind grandmas going 55 mph.

Any vehicle over 10,000 pounds (registered weight), or vehicles pulling trailers are restricted from the left lane where posted. To throw a wrech in the cogs, I have read in the Seattle P-I in the traffic issues column that the state patrol public relations officer in Seattle encourages "RV's to use the carpool lanes if there are 2 or more peaple in the vehicle!!! Wich is a direct contradiction of the rules as posted. As far as passing the left lane rule is only in posted areas and there will always be at least two lanes in your direction of trave to use, so you can still pass grandma Mike!
The speed limit I was not aware of and the rules are not the same for you in your pickup with a trailer as they are for the "big rigs", Most of my experience with the differences is with over dimensional (wide or high) boats, In a non -commercial setting the rules and permits are vastly different. One other thing to keep in mind is just because a trooper / commercial vehicle enforcement officer writes you a ticket for something does not always mean he is #1 correct and #2 following proper procedures. My company fights every ticket our drivers get and a majority are thrown out, we pay fines on maybe 30% of non weight infractions, and a majority of those are reduced fines...
Oh and Sinker That may well have been a bbq, they do that from time to time for public relations. Usually have pretty good food too...
