We don't have a major steel industry because of the pollutants that arise from making steel from ore. We have mini-mills that produce most of the steel from scrap and that's not going to cut it for major projects like bridges. I dought the china stuff is any better, my BiL deals with chinese steel all the time , and finds all sorts of crap in the steel, other steel chunks, ball bearings, ect.

It's a good thing Oh-mama is doing a lot to stop the rape....fuel, massive projects....bye bye....that's what happens when China holds the IOU of our ever-spending country. Oh-mama's now in the pocket of the big boyz club. But all it takes is hot air to float his nonsense over the Hopey Changies who depend on the government to save them from themselves. Just keep those checks comin'.

My personal favorite is the "stainless steel" impliments that rust. While China can produce good products, they often don't. I have a number of brand name shirts that the threads just simply disintegrate. Chinese cotton?......grown in the rice fields, maybe.

Eastbound Tacoma Narrows bridge was built in South Korea. "Most of the steel came from Japan. The company that supplied the concrete is owned by a corporation based in Tokyo. The mile-long deck was built in South Korea and hauled to Tacoma on Dutch ships. All the cable-spinning equipment came from Japan, and the 19,000 miles of wire inside the main cables was manufactured in South Korea, China and England. Upset about it? Bring it up with the head honcho at Tacoma Narrows Constructors, project manager Manuel Rondon. You might get a sympathetic ear, but then again, you might not. Rondon himself is an import – from Venezuela. The new Narrows bridge is a prime example of a new global reality in the world of big construction. It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Let's just pretend they DID use American labor and materials in the construction of the bridge in question.
Then everyone would be sniveling about the outrageous price.
It costs real money to use American labor and materials in manufacturing. Remember that the next time you spend your money on some import bullsh!t because it had the lowest price. If we weren't all such a bunch of tightasses, corporations wouldn't need to offshore their jobs like they have. We asked for Wal Mart garbage, and now we have it..........while college kids get burger-flipping jobs because service industry jobs is all we have left for the masses.
To tell you the truth, I'm not crazy about "I saved X dollars on whateverthehell" stories, because someone probably got laid off so you could "save X dollars."
I understand that people have to watch their expenditures, and not throw money around willy-nilly, but this "Pay Less. Live Better" story doesn't seem to be working out all that well.
Carry on. I'm going to go pour a drink of American-distilled whiskey.

Yeah.........I try to do the right thing, but I'll be damned if all my reels aren't made by fur'ners. I'll make up for it with more American whiskey.
