When I wasn't too hung over, I was on the beach by 6:30 and fished until I got hungry. I was north of Zippers closer to San Jose del Cabo. I spent my 60th birthday watching the sun come up while I fished in the surf. You can almost set your watch by sun up and sunset as it doesn't vary much. Same with the tides. No roosters just a couple of Sierra.

As for the RIU Santa Fe. If your staying there I would say don't waste your time one making reservations for dinner. The buffet was awesome! One negative is if you plan on going into town often it adds up real quick. I think it was between 15-20 bucks each way. The drivers are part of a union and all charge same rate. Also if you plan on bringing sluts to your room it won't happen... They check for your bracelet at the gate

Not at all a "look what I can do" move. Rather "That sweepng condemnation of an entire style of fishing vessel that has been around for decades does not jibe at all my own experience". Instead of saying "Pangas suck,spend some money and get a real boat", you could have said "I think pangas suck, I had a horrible experience on a so-called super panga, so from my perspectivbe, save your money and get a real boat". Those shots are from three different pangas. The first, with the roosterfish, is a tiny barebones piece of crap ......but we still caught a dozen roosters from it. The captain knew his stuff. Pangas are one of the most cost-effective bargains all over Mexico. the last photos (the dorado I'm holding with the red flyreel) were from last October fishing on a quickie 2-trip on the La Mosca. He charged us $150 and put each of us on fish. That is a "super panga". It is docked front of Baja Anglers (another great outfit, but much more expensive. I would also seek out Ramon Druck on the panga "Cheers" if you want great value. Bigger boats are more expensive and comfortable especially for girls, but I would not overlook a panga trip. I've done dozens and had some awesome fishing on them.

Re: shore fishing in Cabo proper, it was much better years ago and Stonefish's advice is what I would follow....get up as early as you can and head to those rocks. Cast your way up and cast your way back. I've caught jack crevalle, smaller roosters, hawkfish, sierras and some big houndfish (giant needlefish) tossing metal jigs, waxwings, big Krocs and other stuff. Flyfishing can be tough due to the slope of beach behind you messing up your ability to shoot a cast very far, but the roosters and jacks will come right into the surf boil chasing bait. The lightest spinning rod I use is a TFO Travel Spinning rod rated for 10-25 lb line, paired with an Okuma Cedros 55 loaded with 50 lb Diamond Braid. I use a short, 2' or 3' piece of 60 lb mono as a shock leader. Cast out as far as you can as others have said and crank away. You might be surprised what you can hook off the beach. The biggest pain in the butt comes when the jetski rental outfits start ripping up and down the beach in the late morning. That puts the fish down faster than a flock of pelicans.

I just got back from Cabo and I fished a day with Ramon Druck on Stonefish's advice.

The fishing wasn't the greatest, but Ramon worked his butt off to get us into some fish. The Sierra weren't around this last week, so we mainly targeted yellowtail and roosters. I jigged up a couple of yellowtail in the 25lb class with my Loomis 1086 and a 3 oz Pt. Wilson dart. I also caught a couple of small Roosters on swimbaits in the surf 7 or 8 miles west of Los Arcos on the Pacific side. A couple of skipjack, jack crevalle and a big triggerfish rounded out the catch.

I will definitely be going out with Ramon again. $180 for the boat and a solid 6 hours of fishing was a good deal in my book!

I don't agree with the need for heavy tackle from the beach, at least for this time of year when the big roosters aren't around. I have been going down there the last week of Feb since 2000. We have a timeshare on the Pacific Side. Fishing can be very good from the beach there and it isn't a dawn or dusk only thing unless it is very calm. When my wife wants to sit and read by the pool I frequently grab the rod and go make a few casts. Sometimes the bites on at 2:00 in the afternoon. Love to take a fresh sierra up to the pool bar and have them make ceviche. I like to use a 10ft 10-17lb spinning rod with 20lb power pro and wire leader. Have caught lots of sierra off this beach but it is spotty, sometimes they are there and sometimes not. Also frequently catch jacks and small roosters. Have not had any fish too big to handle, biggest was a 25lb jack which is about all this kind of tackle can handle, but that's a good problem IMHO. You can catch fish on big gear throwing 2-3oz cabo killers and Rangers, but I like to use 1/2 ounce top water plugs. Not nearly as tiring and a lot more fun on the sierra. Finding the fish is the problem, they will hit lots of things such as spoons etc...I just like the top water action and if anyone is catching fish I am too. Another good light tackle guide that I have used in the past is La Mosca. Advantage is the boats can move around to where the fish are and they fish regularly so know where to look. I fly fish when I am out in the boats and they cast top water teaser plugs to get the fish coming towards the boat. PM if you want more details.

I took a Lami X90 HCT rated 15-30 lb. test & a Abu 6500 loaded w/ 40 braid & mono leaders, all the local mexican crackers are yelling "ultra light... gringo want fishing on ultra light !! " I'm like what ?? This is a power stick, you dudes are clueless.....

We jumped on a panga got some bait & hit it right off the arches @ 1st light..


1st 20 lb. yellowtail tuna I found out who was clueless, later in the morning the 30 lb. dorado was even worse....lol.


Jezzz, but those warm water gamefish can PULL !

I had a Curado 300e filled to the brim with #40 Powerpro on the 1086. We were using a vertical "drop the jig to the bottom and rip it back as fast as you can" technique. Lucky for me, neither yellowtail took more than about 75 yards of line at a time... but I had the drag screwed down about as tight as it would go.

I'd say that a 1086c would be too light to fast troll for them, but the jigging was like fishing albacore. They definitely tested the tackle, but Ramon was ready to chase the fish if we had to.

I caught the roosters on my 1163c with a 200 DHSV. They were in the 4 lb. range and scrapped surprisingly well on that rod. I brought the gear down for the Sierra which we didn't end up catching.

Cool, I have one of those. Might need to "Parkerize" it b4 heading down w/ some of those magic carbon fiber drag washers.

It is doable and I did get some big Jacks (25lb) from the beach with my Curado and 1264 combo the first year, finally broke the rod on a Jack and after seeing what lives there I decided I wanted to be in the game if the one I was there looking for actually bit my hook....

I've seen yellowfin tuna boiling just off of the point, know guys that have caught them, 25lb of tuna will take your stuff and go... 50lb rooster will just take it faster.

Stonefish knows what he's talking about. He's hauled more graphite to Mexico than Boeing! I was worried he was over his graphite limit! I thought he might end up in a Mexican jail for smuggling large quantities of American graphite across the border. I hear they treat graphite like they do Mary Jane!
