If only the adult was as smart as a rutabaga, he wouldn't have left a loaded pistol in an unlocked glove compartment.

Leaving a weapon that can be accessed by any child is horrendous parenting, unfortunately you cannot legislate common sense.

No on the odds and I'm with you it was probably a Glock, which brings up one of the issues with that particular gun and that is there really is no safety on it.
Still the true safety would have been conscientious control of that weapon around children, they knew where it was and like children acted when the adult was not around.
It seems ludicrous to have a gun for protection only to leave it available to access by children.

The little girl in this tragic case is dead. There is no felony possession case here. What should the Dad be charged with? My heart goes out to him and his family, I'm certain that he is suffering through hell on earth right now....

Wow! Was it FishPrick talking? There are plenty of things to pick on, but don't you think you went way overboard? Sometimes you should think a little........FIRST!

I have a chip on my shoulder against people who cause other people to lose their life, liberty or property.
Never gotten any DUIs or any other type of trouble, I'm just not razzle dazzled by a badge and a uniform--cops are just people, like anyone else, and are not immune from criticism. There are good cops, there are bad cops but most of them are average cops. Unfortunately, the brotherhood of the badge doesn't distinguish and always mindlessly huddles up to protect their own no matter how right or wrong that person is, without ever stopping to think about whether they should. There are some cops that are no better than the people they pursue. This guy is irresponsible and bad cop so all good cops should be ashamed of him. Since none of them will speak out, this diminishes my respect for the rest of them. If somebody in my family or profession did this, I'd shun them for it, not go line up at the hospital to show support--by their actions they are condoning what he did. If this was a normal person, they'd get handcuffs and jail but instead since it is a LEO, they are all at the hospital and have their "thoughts and prayers" with him. Will they charge this officer, like they would a non-LEO? I don't think so.
Needing to bring a loaded gun at the store is paranoia and cowardice, like a scared and vulnerable child. "Hurr durr, I need a loaded gun at the store because the world is so dangerous." Leaving it where kids can get it is careless, stupid and despicable. He is just as bad as the other person this thread was started about, but he will get a free pass from most of you just because he is a cop--but not from me.
Sure, I'm the prick for calling him out, not this irresponsible a-hole. Wait, which one of us caused a 7 year old girl to die? Was it him or me that carelessly left a loaded firearm in a place a child could grab it? It could have been a lot worse, it could have been brought to school and....

The cop in this case did one thing wrong.......one. And he will dearly pay for it.....most likely for life. I don't know him, but I can guess that his concerns are far from his own troubles at the moment, and I would imagine he is wishing he could change a lot of things. He has/had good reason to pack as a badge never is off duty, and having a weapon around could very well be the life saver it is intended to be........unfortunately, he left the kids in the car with the glove box most likely unlocked......fatal mistake. Unless you know this guy personally, cowardice doesn't even enter into the picture for me.....can't say one way or the other, and your judgment of what constitutes a coward maybe needs another look. I would guess this cop will face prosecution, but the sentence won't even begin to touch what he already learned and is about to learn. Terrible tragedy, and preventable. BTW, Support does NOT necessarily mean condoning......the first means you care, the second means you agree......I doubt any of the cop's supporters agree with what happened.
Isn't all this quite obvious??

I doubt this was the first time he has done this. This was the first time something happened.
I don't support this cop anymore than the crackheads in the first post, they are both dirtbags in my book for putting children in peril. Why didn't the police release a statement praying for the family of the first group? They should treat the people the same. Why should one get special treatment because of their job? An off-duty police officer who commits an illegal act that results in a death of an innocent person should have no more rights or legal protections than any other private citizen.
If I was a cop, I wouldn't carry around a gun off duty. Who the hell wants to work during their time off for free? Cops are not on duty 24/7, when off duty they have no requirement to insert themselves into dangerous situations. Does he carry handcuffs, pepper spray, taser, baton and other restraining devices or just a lethal weapon, so he only plans on killing people and not arresting them after hours?
If he wants to pack, then the gun should be on his person or unloaded and locked in the glove box, not loaded and unlocked in the glove box where children have access to it. If he wanted to have the gun, how long does it take to load a magazine in the gun? I don't get why he needed to have it loaded in the glovebox, if he needed it loaded that badly, it should have been on his person. If he took this simple step, as required by the law, his daughter would still be alive.
Many people think it is better to place your children's safety first above all else. If your children are with you, you should try to keep out of a confrontation. Seeing a violent confrontation is dangerous for your children both physically as well as emotionally. If this guy wasn't respectful of his own families safety, how respectful would he be of mine?
Yes this guy is a coward, he was so afraid to go to the store without a loaded gun, that he put his own children's lives at risk. Somebody with this level of common sense and irresponsibility does not deserve to be a cop. A trained police officer should have the self-discipline to not break the law while off-duty. A coward is somebody who is unreasonably afraid of crime at the local store so brings a gun, a non-coward is somebody brave enough to risk actual danger, unarmed if need be. You don't need a gun to save somebodies life.
Everyone wanted to crucify the father of the little boy in Bremerton, but now everyone wants to support this father. I say, no way. When a cop breaks the law, they should be punished more severely than a normal person, because they are also breaking the public's trust in them, in effect they are the law and should know better than to break the same laws they have sworn to uphold. In reality, most of the time cops break the law, they are slapped on the wrist, if punished at all.
And yes, I'm writing a long letter to the Snohomish county prosecutor, the chief of police that employs this guy and even to this guy himself once they release the name. The daughter deserved better.

Wow!!!
First off my condolences to the family after this tragic event, I am sure they are devastated.
Next, I believe that most Officers are under some sort of oath or obligation to carry when they are not on duty, perhaps this may not be the case here. Time will tell.
But to call this man a coward is amazingly contrite and downright stupid. I do not know this man but he did go into a profession that puts him at risk during his regular business shift so I doubt he is a coward.
My insight would be that he is so used to having a weapon with him that he overlooked it in the glove, or just plain forgot and went about his errand, which we all know now has turned tragic.
The interwebz makes it too easy to armchair quarterback and second guess all things and then profess to the world that you are some sort of expert. Fact is none of us was there and this family, which consists of more than just this man, is living this nightmare, you fanning the flames does nothing to appease the families pain.
"Let yea who is without fault cast the first stone!"

Gotta agree. Cowardice is not applicable. When you live with a piece 24/7 it kinda assumes the threat level of a rock, unfortunately. Familiarity breeds contempt and so forth. Never, never underestimate the Kinder. A problem solving brain with no govenor. and no experience. Just monkey see Monkey do. bang bang

I don't think he's a coward...I think he's unbelievably stupid...and if he wasn't a cop he'd be having his balls hung from the nearest telephone pole right now, and they should be, too.
