Did anybody try Hevi-shot this year for ducks or geese? It's supposed to be an awesome new alternative to steel shot. I just can't justify $2.50 per shot,Man that's STEEP!

HBP, I shot Hevi-Shoot all season this year and it is a good product. There are a few things I can share with you that may be helpful. First, the ammo is available from the factory at $320 a flat. Thats 250 shells, which works out to $1.28 per shot. Any group of guys can get together and get the "club" price. There is no minimum order size. Second, It is as good as the stories say it is, BUT you have to be able to put it on the bird. The pattern is very very tight and a lot of our club members have had a problem being that "on". That includes me as well. Some days I can hit and some days I'm off. At our club we have
a lot of back-up shooting as it is really a controlled gang shoot when more than 6 or 7 hunters are together. It will take mallards cleanly at 60 plus yards and I have dumped steele hit cripples at more than 80. There is no reason to shoot at a bird at such a distance unless it is an attempt to dispatch a wounded bird. Please do not think that as a sportsman I would take such a shot under any other circumstances. What the product has done is bring back to life the almost lost art of pass-shooting. There is no reason to switch from steele for those birds taken
over decoys in my humble opinion. It is a great product however for those with a legitimate need for extended range shot shells.

I'm going to try it out on geese this weekend. I think that is where the extra retained enrgy will really help. I also have a few Tungsten shells to use as well.

Very Good stuff, I shot all of the high breads, and Hevi was far better than Bismuth, and Matrix. Not only did it shoota long way, it holda tight patern. 70 yard clean up shots were not uncommon. Alot of the birds would come back dead. Expensive, but for big birds and long shots well woth it, there is no need for more than one shot with this stuff.

For what it's worth I have only used size 4 shot on both ducks and geese. The club next to ours has
more experience with this stuff than we do as one of them is a Hevi-Shot company guy. What we hear is that the 7 1/2 load is a better duck buster. It's hard for me to understand why. The pattern with 4's is plenty dense. I have aquired the shot for reloading again in 4's. It drops poorly in my Pozie and the reloading manual says you should weigh each load because it drops poorly in sizes larger than 6's. Well, I'll have a better knowledge of this stuff by next season. If your not using #4 but another size I would like to hear
what your experience is with this product. Thanks!

Maybe now that Remington is gonna load hevi-shot the price will drop a little since it will be a bigger production plant, if thats the case I might just have to try a box or two. It still makes me wonder why it patterns so tight since the shot is not very round? I would think the patterns would have a ton of flyers.

HBP, I had the same thought and looked into it. The answer is that if it is heavy enough and flys fast enough, the roundness becomes less and less a factor. There is also the fact that the patterns are very center heavy and widens very slowly as distance is increased. You may also notice that the size of the shot isn't very uniform either. We are all learning a lot of new things that fly in the face of older theory.

From what I have heard the price should come down. A couple of my friends work at the place that makes it. One of them is an avid goose hunter and was telling me that he gets more clean kills with Hevi-Shot than any other non-toxic shot.
