I'm also thinking about coming out with a copper/silver 50/50, something a little less flashy as the gold/silver, but still with the good contrast...what do you guys think of that idea?

What are going to do with a spoon, Salmo? You gonna cast that RVRCPR with your spey rod? Besides, I thought you only rescued spoons lost on the river bed...... wink

I think it's a great idea, but you might be a little late to the party as R&B's shipment of 50/50 silver/coppers shows up in early April. thumbs

No Paker, I won't cast the RVRCPR with my Spey rod. I'll use my $30 Daiwa spinning rod, same as I did last year when I lost some salvaged spoons to river snags. I think I was low on spinners ($$), and there were some bright silvers in that wood pile.

I actually like these two much better. The first one for the 50/50 spoon and the other for the Cop Car.

You're welcome, Todd! laugh

Todd,

I'd certainly be interested in getting some 50/50's if they were available in copper/gold. I've racked up some pretty impressive numbers on that combination. Or even better, copper/brass.

Why would a fish prefer a 50:50 over a solid finish spoon? I wonder if they catch my eye, and the fish just hits whatever lands in its territory.

The 50/50s have better contrast and are going to reflect light differently in different water situations.

I suppose those occasions happen Todd. In the coho episode I mentioned above, because I was casting into snag infested water, I used scavenged spoons of whatever brand, expecting to lose a bunch. My limited experience is that they will hit anything when they are on the snap, and won't hit anything I throw when they aren't. Therefore my strategy is to hunt for snappy fish. But I sure am attracted to the coolest gear on the rack in the tackle shop, and 50:50s grab my eye way more than all chrome or all brass. And copper really appeals, but my recollection from that spinner book by Jed Davis is that copper allegedly isn't as productive as bright silver or dull black. What do you think?

I think Jed Davis is no more of an expert than about 90 other anglers I know...he just wrote all his "expertness" out in a book.

I've been fishing hardware most of my life, and never even read his book until 2009 or 2010...some good info, some good chuckles...'bout the same with any other "expert" book.

50/50 matte silver/copper, hammered, 1/2 oz.
50/50 matte silver/black, hammered, 2/5 oz.
70/30 copper/black, hammered, 2/5 oz.
70/30 brass/black, hammered, 2/5 oz.

See my point?

Todd,

With that logic I suddenly feel so much better for being at odds with some of the expert opinion expressed in steelhead fly fishing books too. I thought all those fish I caught the wrong way were accidental.

However, Ickstream appears to have a penchant for 50:50 and 70:30, so mixed spoons either matter to fish, but they especially matter to fishermen. So how are ya' gonna' produce a whole or part copper spoon while opposing Pebble Mine? Real life can be so tough, but fishing choices should be simple.

And are we gonna' see that CPCR spoon? I'd buy one for novelty's sake.

True.

SG should also know that 50/50 and 70/30 flies are superior to monochromatic. No pebble mines required. Just factory farms.

IS out.

IS,

I know that multicolor flies appeal to me more than monochromatic ones, but I've caught enough fish on both to think it may not matter at all. But like Todd says about the spoons, when it matters, it matters. If I really knew I'd write a book that would outsell Jed Davis, Herzog, and Vedder combined. But I don't, so I won't.

First the lure has to catch the fisherman, then it catches the fish.
