I've seen people using floats to fish for seabass from the jetty. Has anyone done this before or have any advice on a set up or what floats to use? I like the idea of not being snagged and having a float to watch. Thanks all

the guys i've seen using floats are typically fishing for lings. most will use sand shrimp to catch some greenling or sea bass to put under a big slip bobber.

i'd imagine using a smaller setup would work for sea bass just fine. i don't think bait is critical, when they're around they'll practically hit a chunk of pencil lead.

2oz weight and chunk of herring should do the trick with a slip float @ 10' or so.Good luck,

A float with the wave action will give a curly-tail rubber jig with skirt plenty of action sweeten with chunk of herring or shrimp if not getting hits. Be safe with the waves. Have fun. Eat well.

I second that, a jig with a curly tail and skirt will rock the rockfish, add bait and or scent if bites are slow

I'll get some big floats and give it a shot. I've got the bait and rubber jigs covered. I'll be on spring break after wednesday so I'll be out there the first decent day. A spring time fish fry is in order, maybe some crab too ! Thanks for the pointers.

I haven't fished for ling with a float on the jetty but floats work great for perch and bass. Any common bait for both with curly tails and white worms being bass killers.

Size can make a huge difference out there as my dad proved many years ago. We were using large worms and not getting much and dad switched to 1 inch tiny white worms and killed them. Don't know for sure if a small worm will work as well under a float but always worth having with you.

Used to catch the hell out of bass using the throat of the first one caught. Tough and flexible led to many caught on same chunk of meat.

If you're planning on fishing the south jetty at Westport, you'll probably need a Discover Pass to use the parking lot. A few years back, when a $5 daily use fee was required, we'd park by the foghorn and walk out to the jetty. The finger jetties in Westport should be fee free.

I'm heading out there tomorrow armed to the gills with lots of stuff. I've got all kinds of white rubber worms from big to little, as well as some other colors. Some bigger slip floats, wieghts , jigheads, anchovies...... ect. I fugured the float with a smaller jig or anchovies would work for bass, and fish bigger worms with jigheads , and bait on the bottom for lings. And a crab snare with salmon bits to catch my dessert ! thanks for all the info

I've also done well for rockfish with white split tail spinnerbait trailers

Gulp Saltwater in the sandworm or little crab works great too.
