Going for a few days next week with the wife. Neither of us have been. Plan on seeing a couple shows but aside from that, what would you recommend? I'd especially like to know what some good restaurants are. I heard somewhere has fried chicken eggs Benedict and that just sounds incredible. Drew

Never been to the Bass Pro shop. I am no Vegas fan. Been there enough times for various trade shows. At night, The Strip is spectacular with all the lights. Take a walk down the strip at night. It is a town that never sleeps.
I don't think I've ever had a bad meal in Vegas either. So, where ever you go, you can expect good food.
I've always wanted to rent a car for the day and drive out to Red Rocks canyon, or Hoover Dam. Still on my bucket list.

sweet. That's something we'd both be into. The wife enjoys shooting so this is a plus. I've never been much of a card shark so we'll probably play a bunch of slots. I'll definitely check out bass pro shops too.

Drew, Get off the plane, grab your rental car and head for the nearest "In-& Out" Burger! Order the Double Double, Animal Style and get one of their shakes!!! My trips to Vegas doesn't start until I have one of those!!! Make sure you visit "Old Vegas" and have a steak at Binnion's. After dinner walk around old town, there's usually a lazer show going on, music, and a bunch of Vegas characters running around! During the day head to the hills as someone already suggested, you'll be amazed at the differnce from town to wildlife. Evenings, head to the strip, I don't gamble either at least I'm not very good at it, but I've been known to spend my allowance ($20) on a slot machine. Also bring some good walking shoes, you'll find yourself going from attraction to attraction.

If you've got a rental, drive an extra 4-5 miles south of the Bass Club on the freeway for "M" I think for the last couple of years they have the best buffet in Las Vegas. Go on a weekday, at lunch or lines can be brutal.
Ellis Island, on Koval just off E Flamingo. Kind of a dive casino, not very big, but one the best BQ feeds I've ever had. Make sure someone shows you how the line works.
We don't eat on the strip any more, too expensive, not that much better. Try places like the Steak House at Sunset Station in Henderson. Still fairly pricy but you can't find a better meal or service.

I usually hit up all the free attractions. The fountains at the Bellagio are a must as well as the Conservatory. The free show "Sirens of TI" at treasure island is cool, but is often cancelled due to the wind. The Flamingo has a pretty cool garden with a bunch of birds and a koi pond. The MGM Grand has a couple of lions that are cool. The volcano at the Mirage is good too.
We've been to the Shark tank at Mandalay bay and that is pretty cool, if you can get discount tickets. The Sigfried & Roy Secret Garden is good if you like dolphins and large cats.
Pick a day to walk the strip. Hit up one of the liqueur stores and get a few drinks for the walk. (no open container laws in Vegas). The night before go to one of the Harrah's casinos and buy the 24 hour buffet pass (good at 7 casinos Caesars Palace, Rio, Harrah's, the Flamingo, Paris Las Vegas, Imperial Palace and Planet Hollywood) Eat a late dinner that night and use the pass for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the day you are walking the strip. Paris and Planet Hollywood has the best buffets, amazing actually.
Bring good shoes, ibuprofen, sun glasses, and TUMS. Have fun.
Where are you staying?

The machine gun rentals are the reason I want to visit someday. Sounds like a blast!

best post! and yes be careful when getting off the strip! The city is known for minimizing the attention of violent acts that take place there, bad for biz.

We're staying at The Fremont. I'm told that's "old Vegas"? is a rental car recommended? I was thinking of taking a cab or two each day and walking a bunch but at $30 a day a car sounds nice. isn't everything vallet parking though?

is a rental car recommended? Try going on KAYAK. (flights, hotels and transpo) It will search most all of the "travel engines" simultaneously. Buy your rental car contract/agreement online. Let's say you chose an econobox vehicle to be thrifty. If the rental car company is out of that class of vehicle, they might not tell you at time of pickup. Instead, they may try to upgrade you at your cost. Beware of that. If they don't have your vehicle class in stock they have to upgrade you at their cost. This has always been my experience and I've had the "upgrade trick" played as well. You typically don't get a very good deal if you walk up to the counter cold-turkey at your destination. Figure on a butt rape. Better to hear the clerk say, "Wow, you got a good deal !" I usually end up with Hotwire or Travelocity. (or a combination) I try to look them all over, though. If you want to fly Southwest, you have to go straight to Southwest. They don't play the travel search engine game.

There is so much to do. I think I got mild tendonitis in my right elbow from holding a drink so much of the time last time I was there. I am a lazy vacationer, it goes like this for me:
Wake up (morning sex pleasee!), eat something, drink at pool, lunch at 2 or 3 (whenever you get too hot), siesta, happy hour (hotel room shots typically if with friends), dinner and maybe gamble until 9 or 10, back to room change into your fancy stuff (clubs won't let you in unless you are dressed nice, no shorts and your shirt should have a collar), then to the club.
There are a lot of clubs to choose from, table service starts about $700 so if there are just two of you, that is not an option. Tons of crazy sh!t happens in those clubs, the best people watching of the day is between midnight and 2 am (hundreds of drunk young people crammed together dancing to horrible music anyone?). Obviously Fri and Sat nights are best to join in the fun.
