I have 2 rifles that I'm going to carry this fall. A Winchester 1894 in .32 Win. Special & a Savage 99E in .308 Win.

The 94 carbine has the stock sights as in buckhorn rear & hooded bead in front.

But now the Savage is upgraded & equipped w/ a Williams FP peep on the rear two scope mount holes & Marbles white bead up front.

My 53 year old eyes are still good for 2-3 MOA @ the range at 100 yards. Anyone else still going at it w/o optics ??

im more of a scope guy, but on little guns, and lever guns, open sights is the way to go IMO... i have a friend that used that same 1894 (his is a 1942 year) to get his 4 point last year... hes 60 years old...

close range (100 yards and under) you should be golden....

2-3 MOA is pretty damn good.
I just went back to irons the other day with the new AR.
Just got it on paper at 50 yards.

It's fun....I need take it to our developed range and see what I can do.

Keep in mind that the range is not the woods. My friend was hunting bear last year when out comes the beast. Early morning , black bear, marlin .450. Can't see the front sight, and misses the shot. Mind you he is an excellent shot, killed a moose at 385 a few years ago, just lost the front sight in the dark. Went back with a scoped .30-06 and did the job. 385# blackie.

21 deer, 10 elk, and 2 bears tagged. 3 deer, 0 elk, and 1 bear taken with a scope. I do run red dots on a few rigs, 1X magnification, so if you add in 1X magnification I have taken 1 bear and 1 elk using a red dot.

Perfectly happy running a peep sight or straight irons on my rifles and ML's out to 150 yards. I'm 46, and I wear readers.

Awe Schiit... I was 43 when I could not see well enough in the dark to tie a newly broken off leader, now I'm 60. Bad eyes are a bitch, especially if you have promised some free fancy gunsmithing work to some dang young feller.

Week and a half and I should have some work for you Marvin. Class 3 stuff takes way too long.

Marvin likes Class 3 stuff.... Specially when it's all legal like with paper work involved. Easy on the ears and all.

I was surprised myself, grabbed that .32 special & an older box of reloads that my Dad said were right on @ 50 yards & shot a bench rested group @ 100.

The front sight almost completely eclipsed the 12" black bull on the target, I just took my time & squeezed off 3 good ones. Then walked out & the 3 were right on the X ring in a 2.5" triangle group.

Well da....am, guess Pops was right.

That is so true, it is a hunting at a self imposed disadvantage.

I'm at the age were I have no problem passing on a shot, it has to be right or I just won't take it.

Figure on using the Savage .308 for most of my black bear hunting, have a brass insert on the rear peep aperture & that white bead front really stands out, I've been walking the woods in different light conditions & I can really see well with this combination.

Worked up a load w/ the Speer 180 grain Mag Tip & Hodgdon's Varget, getting me 2500+ fps @ the muzzle, figure I'm good from up close & personal out to 100 yards.

I have not tried it but Tritium is used on some irons.
Supposedly it will show as off-white in daylight and sort of glow in low light light like the old luminous stuff.
Apparently doesn't need recharging and is supposed to emit its own light for 10 years.

Damn, sounds like a guy could go sterile running that.

i'll be hunting with irons this year...on my knight bighorn. took it out a few weeks ago and shot cloverleaf groups at 50, and decent ones at 100. even at 50 the front bead nearly covers up an 8" target.

never thought shooting a muzzleloader would be so much fun. wish i would have gotten into it earlier. the way things are going, i might have to sell my model 70!

I have a Knight 54 cal that shoots clover leafs at 100 all day long. My eyesight isn't that good and I am not such an extrordinary marksman mostly I attribute the accuracy to a rear peep sight... it cut my groups in half.

I shoot NRA silhouette matches and thats the only way you can shoot. Off hand, iron sights, and standing. IMO its the perfect practice for the rifle shooting skills (dosent help for swinging on birds). Made some real improvements with my muzzleloader and even on the benched scoped rifles after I started shooting matches. Shooting iron sights accurately improves your breathing, trigger squeeze, and overall steadiness.

What type of NRA Silhouette matches do you shoot in ? I too have been a little interested in this sport and was just wondering what type of match it is and where you go to do it?

Is it in WA State?

I shoot lever action pistol cartridge and small bore cowboy rifle. I shoot at a range over in Lapwai, Idaho. I know there is a range over on the wet side somewhere that shoots similar matches. One of the people I shoot with goes over there for a match on occasion. Ask around, somebody might know. I'll ask at the next match.
