I've been fortunate enough to tangle with a few Bluefin Trevally, but no GT's yet.
Another species to add to the bucket list.

Cool vid. I've caught small GTs but nothing over 10 lbs yet...but even 5 and 6 pounders are ridiculously strong. That video looks like it was shot in the Seychelles. THey catch 100 pounders+ in Hawaii but nearly always on a slide bait rig with a bell on the rod while plunking.

How much difference is there between a 30 lb Jack Crevalle and a 30lb GT? We've gotten the big jacks in baja in the past....freight trains, that's what they are.

I hear you Mingo. The BT's I've caught were only in the 5-6 lb range and corked a 10 wt. Big jacks are a blast as well.
Another great fighting fish for its size is a Mexican Lookdown. Kind of like reeling in a thin silver platter sideways.

Glad you enjoyed the vid. I like how the anglers rods are flattened out and the sound of gel spun burning through the guides.
Those warmwater saltwater fish all have great motors.

Stam, remember the jacks and trevally we caught in Panama......like the bluefin trevally in my avatar (from Panama, of course, one that size would make the papers in Hawaii) are insane....but so are Jack Crevalle. They are ALL jacks, but in my humble opinion, I would give the nod to GTs over Jack Crevalle for pure muscle power. I have hooked them around 20-25ish pounds, but have not landed one over 10 pounds yet. Imagine taking a mean, angry Baja jack crevalle, pumping him full of steroids and saying really bad things about his mama. that is the fight of a GT of equal size. I'd rate them like this using a 20 pound fish in each species: GT fight, A+. Bluefin Trevally fight, A, Jack Crevalle fight, A-. See? There is no bad option here. Either way, you have an "A grade" battle on your hands.

yeah.... I'll be needing to hook into one of those. The fact that they are fearless once they lock onto the prey and will literally ignore you as they explode on the lure/fly/popper/sardina 5 ft from your feet washing your face in seawater as they turn.... is appealing to me.

I have travelled to many exotic locales in search of GTs. Got 5 pounders in Palau and some a bit larger in Yap. Finally hit the jackpot off the Kimberly in Australia. My largest was only about 25 pounds but, we hooked dozens in the 8-12 pound class. I think they are tougher than similar sized jacks but they are all awesome fish. I still think the hardest pulling fish I have ever encountered are yellowtail, followed, in no particular order by amberjack, Cubera snapper, roosterfish, and yelllowfin. Fastest fish I have ever hooked are Wahoo and bonefish. Coolest allround remains the tarpon.

We lived on Big Island beaches through the Winter and Spring of my 6th grade year, and caught a few as kids on (what felt like) Tuna rods on the South side of Mahukona park. The local kids would chum them in with a bread and dried shrimp (I think?) concoction, then just put a chunk of squid,snail, or whatever on and cast it into the frenzy. We hooked a few of the huge darker fish, but never got anything to hand but smaller stuff, which still required two kids on the rod and at least one more shouting directions.

I sure would love to have another experience like that, though with a fly rod the next time around.
