Anyone ever fished for them? I think they have them in some of the larger Eastern Washington lakes. I've heard them referred to as "fresh water ling cod".

There's a lot of them in Chelan, and I believe they are in Kachess and Kecheelus, too.

Fish on...

I've caught them in Lake Cle Elum, some call them Poor man's Lobster.

Roosevelt lake has them, as well as Sullivan and Chelan... the record came out of Bead lake by a buddies coworker... from what ive been told, whitefish chunks, smelt chunks, and even a bunch of night crawlers on a 4/0 sized hook works...bounce bottom at night in a boat just like you would fish for bottom fish in the sound... i would rig it a 18 or so inch dropper line with a 1-2oz pyramid sinker to a 3 way swivel, and run a 12-14 inch leader off the 3 way with a 4/0 hook....keep thumpin the bottom... ive never personally caught them, but my buddies have, and they do quite well with some fish in the 10-13 pound range, but most are smaller... buddy wants to take a trip to Chelan with his boat this summer, so i may try to catch them there, ive heard there is a decent population in Chelan...

Fished for them way up in BC years ago. We didn't catch any.
An old timer at the camp was catching them every day. He ran set lines that he put out in the evening and soaked overnight, then check them in the morning.
They sure are ugly, but he raved about their eating quality.

AP, I know you can catch them during the day, and by jigging buzz bombs or spoons...you don't have to fish at night, or use bait, though I hear that bait fishing at night is more effective.

Fish on...

Bead lake used to have a good number back in the mid eighties. We fished it a few times with only one fish for our effort .haven't been there in twenty years but remember it being crystal clear and very cold

I did long ago through the ice in Minnesota-many of the lakes up Nort have burbot.

They use to have burbot tourneys.--That would be the only reason I would target a burbot.

They be fugly and when you pull em through the ice they wrap around your arm in a freaky way..

I'm nearly certain that lings are not sculpins. Cabezon would be the largest member of the sculpin family.

Double dongs will always work if a predator is willing to eat something that big. I'm curious if a 10 pound burbot would eat the same size bait as a 10 pounds ling?

a Burbot will pretty much eat anything you put in its face from what ive been told... its finding them first that matters... just like Lings....

Burbot are close related relatives of the Ling..

Sculpins are of the family Cottidae and lingcod and greenling are Hexagrammidae. They are indeed very different. The big bad mofo of the Cottidae is the Cabezon which can reach 20-25 pounds but still a snack for a ling grand mother......

I would stick to some newer biology books although I'll bet even those your gramps used would cover the fact that every life form reproduces. Now you know......

Triploids dont reproduce do they? dear god dont tell me im wrong on that one, otherwise i give up...

AP i would focus on Chelan or Bead, the record came out of Bead in like 03 or 04 and was around 17 pounds...

UGLY lookin fish...

Bead is up near Colville, so Chelan might be a better choice unless you want to travel.... if you do, you might even see, or hear some Wolves...

It was legal to set out a couple lines with up to 3 baits on them over night on Chelan up until a few years ago. I was told it isnt now. They have more of an eel look to them than Lingcod and are not the toothey critters most of us know. Smell like hell when you clean one but do taste good.
