It was legal to set out a couple lines with up to 3 baits on them over night on Chelan up until a few years ago. I was told it isnt now. They have more of an eel look to them than Lingcod and are not the toothey critters most of us know. Smell like hell when you clean one but do taste good.

I fished them a few times in Chelan. Right on the bottom in over 100 feet of water ( I think around 130) in front of 25 mile on the far side. They look a lot like an eel . Good eating, but not much over 4-5 pounds on average. We used jigs with a chunk on herring for bait. Fished in the daylight.

Back in Mn, there is an eelpout festival in the winter. Usually they ice fish for them, but some folks prefer to cut a big hole in the ice and launch their boat.

Never caught one but would like to add it to my list someday. Just did a google image search and some of them can get pretty large.

Me too Coho! Anoka high school. I hit the Oregon trail a little later than most of the other clan though!

Played hockey every day in the winter growing up, good times on the river and ponds for sure.

Gotcha redhook,

We Mn people are just OK, the bass boats... whatever.

I almost called it a sled, but I'm learning!

Best,

I've caught a lot of them ice ice fishing in Alaska. I usually catch them on spoons that I jig (little cleo types, and believe it or not, Coyotes if the water isn't deeper than 25' or so) and tube jigs in 3.5 or 4 inches.

Ling cod is Hexigramidae, same as Greenling. They are not closely related to Burbot, and they are not sculpins.

I hate to admit it, but RH got me on the family name for Burbot though, The order is Gadiformes, but the family is Lotidae. It has been 35 years since I took fish 401, my bad.

To completely thrash all theories...........sorry. blush

About 15 years or so ago, I was using a little black and gold panther Martin for rainbows in the lower end of a tributary of one of the eastern Washington lakes that have been mentioned and caught about a 2-3 pound burbot. What was weird is the fact that it was caught in a fairly high gradient cobbly stream with some current. My guess is he was following the bait up stream. Guess I should have eaten him but I thought it was too ugly to keep. beathead

I think the Miss Eelpout picture needs to be bigger since they don't look slimey or disgusting.
