First it was confirmed that Border Patrol agent Brian Terry and his elite tactical unit initially fired bean bags at heavily armed dope smugglers. Now comes news that a Border Patrol training video is instructing agents that, when confronted by a shooter. they should “run away” and “hide”. Only as a last resort, if they are cornered, should agents get “aggressive” and “throw things” at the perps. Local 2544 National Border Patrol Council

Wow, Hank, "Stretch" is got nothing on you. The FEMA-administered computer course, entitled “IS-907- Active Shooter: What You Can Do,” is a 45-minute tutorial that provides guidance to all employees on how to recognize indicators of possible workplace violence and what to do should their office be invaded by gunmen and focuses around three main options; either evacuate, hide out, or in dire circumstances, take action. Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/06/29/bor.../#ixzz20XgrT0mu Border Patrol agents in Arizona are blasting their bosses for telling them, along with all other Department of Homeland Security employees, to run and hide if they encounter an "active shooter." It's one thing to tell civilian employees to cower under a desk if a gunman starts spraying fire in a confined area, say members of Tucson Local 2544/National Border Patrol Council, but to give armed law enforcement professionals the same advice is downright insulting. The instructions from DHS come in the form of pamphlets and a mandatory computer tutorial. “We are now taught in an ‘Active Shooter’ course that if we encounter a shooter in a public place we are to ‘run away’ and ‘hide’" union leader Brandon Judd wrote on the website of 3,300-member union local. “If we are cornered by such a shooter we are to (only as a last resort) become ‘aggressive’ and ‘throw things’ at him or her. We are then advised to ‘call law enforcement’ and wait for their arrival (presumably, while more innocent victims are slaughtered)." WTF do you THINK your employer is going to tell you, Einstein?
Would your company tell your employees to engage an armed assailant, Jerry? F.uck no, they wouldn't................because it exposes them to more liability than saying to engage as a last resort. That's why every grocery store, every convenience store and every bank tells their employees to never engage an assailant.
My company tells you not to bribe foreign dignitaries to close a deal. They tell everyone that, even though about 1 in 10,000 of us would ever have an opportunity to be faced with that decision. Border Patrol agents take this course, but it isn't how they're actually trained to deal with an armed assailant, I'd wager. Mandatory training that doesn't really apply to them, but gives Hank a chance to snivel.
Hank is just getting all sandy because he spends every day looking for something to get sandy about. He probably won't mind if you join in with him, Jerry.

Post events like Columbine etc. a lot of state and federal agencies have been putting a lot of time and effort into analyzing "active shooter" events for the purposes of trying to figure out how to minimize loss of life.
As Dan said, the informational brochure seems to be aimed at a general audience and most certainly contains advice that should be followed. When someone starts shooting at you, run away, and run away fast if you want to live.
As for the LE folks and their training, I can say, based on first hand experience, that current state and federal training's that focus on active shooter scenarios do not include a "run away and save your own [Bleeeeep!]" component.

I understand their concern.
I also understand the concerns of their employer, who employs secretaries, mail room clerks, and dozens of other positions who have no business engaging an armed assailant.

I would hope that any gun+badge toter would default to the formal training and instruction they would have received as part of their LE commissioning process rather than a generic online course or brochure mandated by the administrative side of their department. There are policies and protocols at much higher levels that speak to LE's required actions and best practices in such situations.
That having been said, I am not terribly surprised at the confusion. The border patrols folks I have worked with haven't tended to be the best and brightest lot. Forgive the gross generalization.

Again, based on first hand experience, I will more directly say that you don't know what you are talking about and your alarmist opinions are ill informed.
The article, though it may contain a valid fact or two somewhere, is misleading and is not a good representation of reality.
Believing everything you read and drawing broad conclusions from small snippets of suspect information is a dangerous habit.
