The greater the uncertainty, the less likely punks will be motivated to try robbery. Unlike murder, which is usually a crime of passion, lethal consequences are a disincentive to robbery, and always prevent recidivism.

If gramps had been carrying a 44 mag, he wouldn't have been able to get off as many shots as he did. But then, only one would have to hit. Still, not a very comfy carry piece. Yet he done good.
