I have been doing some work with a local Coalition to help spread awareness about and promote alternatives to the proposed Susitna Hydro project that the state of Alaska is pushing forward at an accelerated rate. http://susitnadamalternatives.org/

The Coalition has been working with a fellow named Aaron Ernst who is in the process of making a documentary for PBS about the project, but more than that, about the people and places that could be forever changed if the dam is built.

The Coalition asked me to take him out for a day and show him around the Susitna to collect some footage for the film. We logged over a hundred miles and stopped to check out a few streams along the way. Lots of chums showing up and a few kings spawning in most tribs. Still a bit early for silvers so we poked around for resident species. All in all a good day.

Keep an eye on the Coalitions web site (link above) and subscribe to the mailing list if you would like to help us work towards keep the Susitna wild. Stay tuned for more info on the film.

A few snapshots from the day.

Well done all-around, Coley. Hard to believe someone would think changing any of that would be an "improvement".

Not related to that watershed, but I saw that PBS Frontline is set to do a special on the Bristol Bay tribs. Good to see that is continuing to gain traction.

Bastard.

Same guy filmed the majority of the Bristol Bay project. Wish I had time to catch it, but alas, we have plans!

I just flew off the glacier from my annual denali mission this morning. While awaiting my flight home at base camp one of the Susitna River Coalition board members landed and came over to our camp to chat. She asked me if I had heard the news. Having been on the mountain a month I had not. We high fived, hugged, and I danced a jig.

It's finally dead...again. Hopefully this time it stays dead and the Sustina lives on as the wild and free river it is meant to be.

Good job Coley. I've never fished it, but have blasted a few ducks on the flats. It would have been a crime to build a dam on that river. If Mr. Vedder comes up for a Fall rainbow trip, maybe I can tag along.
