Hank, post that picture of the Trinity that you sent me a few years ago, if you still have it.

Pretty sure that was a Smith River pic. My avatar pic is on the Smith too.

I'm in too late to be the first to get it right - Just made that drive from the Coast over to Redding last fall. My brake pads are still warped from that GD road. Really gives your rig a work out.

I spent a lot of time as a kid camping at Jedediah Smith SP.
The Smith River, Crescent City and the surrounding area are top notch in my book.
Lots of good memories. I need to get down there again.

One of the DB put ins is just above the north fork and around that bend. The south fork (on the right) has more white-water areas.

IMHO the portion of the Smith that runs through the redwoods is one of the prettiest on earth.

Hankster, have you ever put in about gasque and float down to the park, or just to the forks. There has to be enough water to make the gorge passable, But that is one nice drift, Patricks creek to just below gasqu can be a nice float with the right water, And very productive. I grew up fishing and floating it in the mid 70's to about 84. caught some nice fish in that river, Still go down for an anaul fishing trip with my father on the Smith and Chetco yearly

I've never done that before. I always thought it was too rocky and gnarly through there when the river was fishable. I don't know of any guides that even do that, but I've been up that way banking it. I go up twice a year when I can for salmon in Nov and when the steelies come through after.

I will tell you, that is one pretty drive and river. That road is hard on the brake pads!
Now that I am all the way up the Oregon coast (many times in my younger days) I am going to plan a trip to the Trinity and then work my way up the coast and hit many rivers this fall along the Oregon coast.
I wish I had made time to stop on the Rogue as they are doing some good fishing and catching there right now!

Tish-tang campground has one of the best swimming, rock jumping, fishing holes around. Too bad the hoopa net it. If you go at night the hoopa will never have their nets across the whole river tossing dynamite. If you are camped below the campground on a gravel bar tribal members will never shot over your tent at night to scare you. If you park you car anywhere Weitchpec and are not tribal member your car will probably not be there when you return. Your stuff and windows will be gone for sure every time. Every time. Hwy 96 is one of the best in the state but the locals don't seem to have any problem with treating the outside world like garbage. Probaly just revenge. I love and hate this area.

I fished and swam at Tish-Tang a lot when I was living up there and I've seen the river netted there bank-to-bank too. I had problems with some of the locals up there and fished and hunted with others. I never did have a problem with my car parked at Weitchpec though. The last time I was there was two summers ago and I thought the residents had mellowed a bit and become more tolerant since they got the casino built. Then I heard they didn't allow non-tribal fishing on the rez this year and my opinion changed. There are plenty of other places on the Trinity to fish without taking the chance of pissing people off.

It is very rocky in the gorge, and above, but the gorge has to be just fishable to have enough to get between the two big boulders, or you will get wedged, there re afew guides that float the upper portion but pull out just below gasque before the gorge. We use to climb down the rope and fish from the boulders in the gorge when I was in high school. And as for the house over looking the forks, It us to be owned by a dentist, I was in high school with his daughter. right around the corner was slant bridge and then 2nd bridge, those where some deep swimming holes in the summer. didn't even need a pump for the keg, throw in off the bridge. it would hit the water, and shoot back out of the water 4-5 ft. buddies below would retrieve it and tap it and you where all good. those where the days....... Matt

It had a chumpie run at one time, then they put up a "NO CHUMPIES ALLOWED" sign and they moved up to WA.
