I'm having a heck of a time finding any elk at all in the Malaga unit. I was fortunate enough (well, maybe not) to get drawn for an early cow tag and now have one week left with only spotting 3 elk in the last month.

Anybody have any good ideas for me? I know the area pretty well which is why I'm so stumped. Thanks in advance.

Hey I work in GH grew up there and so on live in UP now but I have been doing some scouting on some elk in the south end of the state and I have been having a lot sightings doubling back on my trail almost when I think I should be continuing on into a honey area where I think I am sure to miss out on something if I take off but sure enough heading back where you came from a little more sneaky is something I have had luck with. What techniques are you using. Are you putting the mileage in on your boots? Are your eyes sore from the glassing? Like fishing if one thing isn't working change everything up and go about it from a completely different angle. Do you have a partner or two to help you out, perhaps some walkie talkies? Well I emptied the thought keg so good luck and get back with the good news.

I've been doing pretty much all of the above which is why I think I am not in an area that holds a lot of elk. From what I can tell they are either higher up in the Naneum or Quilomene or down low in the orchards. I've had several people out with me, radios, logged miles and miles on the boots and come home with a sore head everyday. I have been in areas with lots of sign but only ghosts.

I'm going to have to hope for the general season since my tag closes tomorrow and I won't get another chance to get over there.

In hindsight what I think I should have done is get in touch with the orchards down low.
