Wanting to get a new Tikka rifle this year.

I primarily hunt east side Muleys. Been thinking about the 300WSM. Is this too much or would I be better off with say the 270 WSM?

Suggestions on optics to match would be helpful too. Would like a package that could reach out and touch something up to 300 yards or so. There a lot of opportunities to do that out in the wide open sage and wheat fields that I don't always take with the old '06 with the 3x9 because I just don't feel comfortable with the shot.

And lastly...anybody have a gently "like new" used one up for sale?

Thanks,
Shane

Camo,
We discussed the rifle you refer to once before....
You can't go wrong if you are looking for a hunting rifle.
Not the one to take to the bench for a 50-round afternoon (light).
If I were looking at 300yd shots, I'd buy the Burris FFII in 4.5-14 and it comes with a spotting scope freebie.
Sweet deal.
I just started reloading for my 300WSM and that opens up a whole new world.
Good luck.
Where are you going to buy yours?
Let me know if you need a deal.

gfc~

Just remembered that I posted this last year about the same time. Unfortunately, the extra money I had set aside last year for a rifle had to be spent elsewhere.

You still have the one for sale that you mentioned? I am interested if you still have it.

Thanks,
Shane

300 WSM is not "too much" for mule deer. Really, there isn't much difference between the 300 WSM and the 30-06, especially when you're only talking about shots up to 300 yards. It's only when you get beyond 300 yards that you'll notice any difference between the two, and even then it's not a lot. But, there's no reason not to go with the 300 WSM. The only disadvantage, as goforchrome mentioned, will be the recoil. Hopefully, you're not overly sensitive to recoil. Personally, I wouldn't want a magnum cartridge in such a light rifle, but that's only because I like to shoot my rifles a lot. If you only shoot it a couple times a year it won't make any difference.

Camo,
I traded the T3 that I talked to you about for the same thing in stainless/synthetic.
Shoots great!
Get a Limbsaver recoil pad!
You will know what I mean!
If you need name of good dealer, let me know.
I went to Kesselrings in your neck of the woods and was not impressed with pricing or service.

I want a Tikka T3 Lite in stainless. From what I have read and seen, they are an awesome gun. Either caliber is good for muleys. I used a Remington .280 SSDM for years with a lot of success. Unfortunately, it was stolen.

it really does not matter the caliber you use as long as you can handle it well. i shoot a 338 win mag with federal premium 225 grain bullets and i can and do shoot very well with this gun at very long ranges.i also shoot a 300 mag and a 270. just pick a caliber that you can handle. sometimes the big magnums are not the best for a person.

CAMO, I'm a bit late with this post but I got the 7mm WSM about two seasons ago and love it. It packs a kick but it will get those long shots. If your planing on taking a 300+ shot get some practice and get comfortable with it. shots like that normally get screwed up by the shooter not the gun . thats just my .02 worth. good luck
