Very cool Audball, but too depressing for me. Did anybody else catch the comment, "the Skagit comes close to 30,000 winter steelhead. Almost 25% of the total catch in Oregon!" ? How sad is that now?

Good luck with the sale tho.

Yeah, that Skagit info is real depressing....30,000 caught in 1970-71 season. Most current catch records I could find were 2008-2009.....any guess what the Skagit total steelhead caught by sporties was???

20,000? .......... nope

10,000? ............ nope

5,000 ? ............ uh uh

2,000 ? ......... no, that's too high.....

1,000 ? ........ lower.....

500 ? ........... nope

300 ? ........... no, not that many.......

try 205 lame

30,000 caught on hook and line in one river, in one season ? Hmmm, 300 fish landed every single day for a 100 day period ? Hmmm...was the river in perfect shape every day the whole winter ? How many people can fit on this river on the same day ?

As Salmo g stated, historically best guess estimates put the actual number of sport caught fish at 62% of reported numbers. That would put the actual number of fish caught in the Skagit River in 1970 at around 18,000......still NINETY (90) times as many steelhead as were caught in 2008.....

The season on the Skagit was open from October thru April, and that's just for winter runs...the summer runs ran from April thru October wink

Those numbers from 2008 are hatchery fish only, from one of the crappiest hatchery runs in the entire PNW so far as smolt to adult percentages...so catching 208 of them is not a bad season for the Skagit.

Fish on...

Todd
