Looking to get my map on. I saw a garmin at Cabelas the other day that had a chip so it has huge memory and it seem pretty good. Also wondering about paper maps so I am sure of the land status I am planning on hunting. Any suggestions?

County assessor websites accessed by a laptop with a plug in cell adapter are much more useable than any Rino GPS. Look for the map function after you access a particular parcel, and you should be able to access the owner data.

Thanks doggy! It appears that only some counties have that going on though.

County maps are highly variable, ranging all the way from non-existent to relatively accurate. Don't get trapped into thinking that property lines as shown on county maps are accurate, as they may or may not be. Some are warped to fit, which makes them nice to look at, but not very accurate.

A possibility may be to contact those who use 911 mapping.....police, ambulances, fire departments......and see where they get their maps.....I would imagine they would be pretty much up-to-date as well.

Quite welcome Greg. I use these resources daily as a part of my job, and as Slab says, they are only a rough approximation of what the property lines may actually be.

Some of the eastern WA counties are amazingly detailed in the data available on their assessor's website. Others, pretty limited data. Also, some counties have more than one website or process to access map/ownership data.

Which county are you looking for? I may already have that database set as a favorite as I lend across the state.

Here's a little follow-up on some Jefferson County property data..actually mouth of Hoh area.

I took my hand held GPS and laptop out to the Oil City area to check on the accuracy of the published data from Jefferson County.

What i came back with was a difference of approximately 100 feet! Hmmmmm.....so I did some more reseach and found a recent recorded survey and guess what? In spite of the recent recorded the survey, the County elected to go with their antiquated version. My GPS data matches up pretty well with the new survey, but does that make a difference?.....apparently not.

I'm trying not judge, but it is difficult. smile

Another thing that has bugged me for a long, long time. I would appreciate any feedback you care to throw out concerning this.....

When taking engineering classes back in my college days, it was rather pounded in my head that "implied" accuracies by carrying out decimals points to more than one space further than the input data was a big no-no.
I see most property areas carried out to 1/100 of a acre regularly WITHOUT ANY supporting data. And people pay taxes based on this data.

THAT doesn't seem right at all! If a property has been surveyed, then it would be proper to display such accuracy, however to "create" accuracy by "calculation" or worse yet, "warp to fit" mapping is over the top misleading at best. IMO, NO property should be showing accuracies of up to 1/100 of an acre WITHOUT a supporting survey.

Sorry for the slight diversion....responses appreciated.

edit: spelling....of course
