I caught an anchor rope fishing the Columbia and could tell it was custom made. The following year a person seen it and claimed it was his. Keep in mind this is a real spendy anchor. Is it mine or should I give it back? What is right legally or ethically?

Hmmm good question, well is the guy who claims it a nice guy or some jerk? If he is a pretty cool guy, then I would give it back, but if he is a jerk I would tell him, what's mine is mine and what yours is now mine... but if you fish the river alot, you probally don't want a whole lot of enemies hehe... well good luck and keep the lines tight...

Who knows legally??? If the anchor had been yours, would you expect to get it back, or would you figure it should belong to the finder? I would probably return it if I was convinced it was the original owner that had approached you.

Hey, Duck in the Fog! Sounds like it might be his if you weren't advertising that you found it, and you were in the same general area as where you found the lost treasure. But, legally or not, if I was convinced that it once belonged to this other person I would have to give it back. That's just the way I am.

I guess if I were in the same situation, I would hope someone would return it to me and give me the option to take it back or offer it up to the finder. Along with a special thanks for being the type of person the world needs more of..... Good Luck on your decision.

Is there any markings such as dents scratches or something that the guy could describe to you that would prove it was his anchor. I would give the anchor back if that is the case. It is the right thing to do. If I lost my anchor I would really hope some one would give it back if it were found. the world has enough selfish inconsiderate people. who knows you could make a new budy and really benifit from it.

IF YOU GUYS ARE IN A GENEROUS MOOD I CAN DESCRIBE A ROD LOST ON THE WYNOOCHIE IN MARCH. WAS DRIFTING ALONG FOLLOWING A FISH ON WHEN THE ROD TIP OF A ROD ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BOAT CAUGHT A BRANCH THEN BLOOP IT WENT IN. TRIED IN VAIN TO GET IT BACK. WAS KINDA EXPENSIVE. I GUESS I COULD GIVE A NICE GUY A REWARD IF I GET IT BACK. MAYBE THE GUY WHO WANTS HIS ANCHOR BACK COULD OFFER YOU A REWARD?

This happened to me a few years ago on the Olmpic Peninsula. I had lost my anchor on some rocks in high water and finally giving up unsticking it I cut the rope quite long hoping to get it back during low water, but never did. Then many days later I spotted my anchor on the back of another boat. I asked if they found it up river and they agreed. I told them that it was mine and I would gladly give them the anchor I was now using and the one they had fit into the anchor cradle built into m drift boat. They agreed and the swap was made. I was happy to get it back and I guess they had no guilty feelings.
So I guess my answer to your question is "what do they have for a finders fee" or just give it back and be a good guy. I am sure I would give it back. fp2

Ditto to Fred's comments ... I can't say that I would try to hunt the owner of an anchor down, but if someone convinced me that it was theirs, I'd likely give it back.
