I have never been to the west coast of Vancouver Island. I have a five day weekend coming up this weekend and would like to do some king fishing. Do they have rental boats for mooching or do I need to get a guide. Don't really want to take my boat this trip. Hotels, camping? Are there any good steams to fish nearby (steelhead or salmon)? Looks like I will be going by myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nootka Sound is the best around August first...its out of Gold river...not sure about boat rentals there...You might be able to get rental out of Tahsis, which is a bit north...Boat rentals are many out of Campbell River, Telegraph cove and Port hardy on the east side of island..Take the taswassin (spelling) ferry out of vancouver (just south) to Nanaimo...good luck...Nootka sound is protected and u could get by with a 12 to 14 foot boat...Public camping at Cougar Creek...rated the best in BC...total wilderness...good luck...email me on results or if any other ?s...im heading outweek of 26 and would like report...later

I'd do a search on the web with the words Bamfield or Ucluelet and check out these resort towns, they are on both sides of Barkley Sound about a third of the way up the west side of the Island. I've been to Ucluelet a couple of times but always took my boat. Don't know about rental boats but there are some Charters out of each place. They fish mostly hot spot flashers with long leaders and anchovy. I'll be up there 8/13-8/16. Good Luck!

Smilesforu, This reply may be a bit too late but may help others out. I just got back from a trip out of Bamfield. We stayed at Bamfield lodge in west bamfield. Took a guided fishing trip in a small boat and all we picked up was a few shakers springs and one accidental ling cod. The day before I was lucky enough to nail a 16 pound spring from a kyak that my girlfriend and I had rented, which almost made up for the slow fishing the day before. I don't think I'll try that same guide again for sure. I went out again with a friend who has his own boat out of Port Alberni last friday and we hit several fish but the biggest was only about 10 pounds with the rest closer to five and just barely over some just barely over the 45cm minimum. We fished Pill point, Diplock, Kirby Point and the east side of Fernam Island out there in the Deer group Islands. The best baits now were flasher and hootchies, with the best hootchies having some white and blue or green in them, and also a green and silver spoon accounted for several fish. Also we were runniing pretty deep with the down riggers out to 120 feet! Anchovies seemed to be a waste of time these days.
The reports that I heard was that the fishing was really spotty, one day you would have several hookups with big fish and others almost nothing, which is what we experienced as well. I heard several reports that they were doing quite a bit better out of Uclulet and Tofino at this time and it really isn't too busy this time of year so finding a charter shouldn't be too much of a problem, but the best runs will come in about mid August (Stamp river run) and then you will probably be lucky to find just a place to camp. The lodge owners were saying that they were turning away 2 to 5 phone calls a day from people looking for a place to stay in August.
Even if the fishing isn't great the scenery on Vancouver Island is hard to beat so I'm sure you'll have a great trip if the weather holds out!! Good luck!
