I want to recommend an excellent book titled Salmon Without Rivers: A history of the Pacific Salmon Crisis, by Jim Lichatowich. (1999 Island Press Publishing).
Anyone who is curious about the true causes of salmon declines and wants to gain an understanding of the root causes of the salmon crisis should read this book. It is an excellent historical account of how species that have survived for millions of years may be on the verge of extinction after only some 150 years of "Euro-American" presence in the Northwest.
Would enjoy discussing it with anyone, whether they have read it or not.

Thanks for reminding me, I'm gonna buy it tomorrow. The Peninsula Daily News outdoors reporter sure gave it a good write-up. Sounds like it might be the best book of its kind.

Not to change the subject but another great book that is equally good is:

Bruce Brown's "Mountain In The Clouds: A Search For The Wild Salmon"

It was published around 1981 and gives a very detailed history of the salmon's struggle on the Olympic Penninsula. It explains how our state's bueracracy is the pond scum that it is.

It's a good read.

"Mountain in the Clouds" is an Awsome book it really opened my eyes to the things this stae is doing that most people have no clue about.

Mountain in the clouds is a great book. Kind of makes you melancoly tho.

Both books are classics. Rivers is also available at Amazon.com for under $20. If these aren't enough reading, try Freeman House's book "Totem Salmon," about the coop of commercials, loggers, anglers and enviros who brought the salmon back to the Mattole River.
