UHMW is fantastic, it acts similar to a glass bottom (without the flex). I've rowed both willie and fish-rite with it and I definitely think its worth it, a guide friend recommended it and I believe he was right on.

What is it. is that hte stuff that Willie will put on for $150.00. I did it myself for about $30.00 and that was 2 coats. they only do 1. Mine is just about gone and I don't know why. I etched it and cleaned it and it's just flaking off. I was told that the coat-it was the best but I must not have used the right cleaner or something.

Sorry to hear about 696. I was really hoping it would pass but now I guess we gotta make anotherplan of attack and be better organized next time.

U.H.M.W. IS GREAT STUFF.IT IS A TYPE OF PLASTIC. THEY USE IT IN THE STORES FOR CUTTING BOARDS.WE USE IT IN MY SHOP SOMETIMES FOR BEARINGS.IT WILL OUT LAST 304 308 STAINLESS STEEL.THERE IS DIFFERENT GRADES OF MATERIAL.THEY ALSO USE IT IN COMMERICAL FISHING.LIKE DECK WINCHES,BOW ROLLERS,GILL NET DRUMS.I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I USE TO BUILD THIS STUFF. I WOULD TRY USEING 1/4 BY 1 STRIPS FULL LENGTH.THERE IS A GLUE THAT WE USE TO BOND UHMW TO ALUM.BUT I WILL GET BACK TO YOU ON THE GLUE BECAUSE I DONT HAVE THE NAME OF IT RITE NOW.I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT.

when i bought my willies, i too had that option but the draw back was the price and weight . i have had no problums with just the coat-it. it will protect the bottom from gouges, when going shallow or sliding the boat over embankments. the other thing would be when there are enough gouges in the uhmw will the boat still track the same?. the are some compounds that you can use as a filler. by the the way what are they charging for that now ?.

dcrzfitter,
The stuff is in sheet form and cut to fit the bottom of the boat. It is drilled out in 130 locations and countersunk. then they take aluminum tapered washers and actually plug weld it to the bottom in those 130 locations.
Its suppossed to be alot quieter than aluminum and fiberglass when hitting rocks, They (Willie) will lifetime garentee it the same as the boat.
They charge $600.00 for this option and Koffler will do the same thing, neither will give a discount because of the effectivness of it. They say its the best you can get and if you want it you will pay for it. Even after all the discounts they give on my option/sales reciept, they still add this in after the discounted price. But before the total.

FYI, The Factory is now putting on 2 Cans of Coat-it on the bottom. The cost of this is $100.00 not $150.00.

Does anyone know exactly how much weight this adds to the boat? The stuff really would be awesome protection wise but that stuff is also very heavy. I think coat it applied when necessary would be just as effective and much lighter.
