I have scoured the Automotive stores, and hardware stores from here to Minneapolis, and no one knows what backer rod is. Any idea where I can order some, so I can make some rags for this coming springs fishing? It sucks living in a place where you are the only steelhead junkie, and can't find "stuff". No one to even have prayer meetings with when the rivers are out of shape. Bummed, Misplaced, and Rodless. Merry Xmas.

Try a building supply store. Check the window department.

Hawk,

The stuff is used as a caulking saver around windows and doors and such so you should be able to find it at a building supply or home improvement store ie Home Depot, Eagle Hardware, Fred Meyer, Home Base, etc.

Fish on..........

Teds carries stuff prepacked and I am sure theyll send you some if you end not being able to find it back there anywhere. They also got some that are already premade up so that you have something that you can copy off of.

Now that I've figured this out, try Fisherman's Marine Supply in Portland, OR. at
503-283-0044. They call it FMSI Rag Foam. The number under the UPC code is 13689 80000. I bought 3 feet today for $2. It's color is white

Thanks guys for the help. I found some grey stuff here, and have some hot leads on white. Sems to be two types. A soft one, and a more closed cell rigid foam. Any preference. May have to hook up with my Mafia connections. Have you ever tried putting flourescent dots of nail polish, or permanent marker on them? Seemed like a guy could do some whacky stuff with prism tape or glitter also. I might just be making this way to difficult. Thats what low frozen rivers and -10 degree weather will do to you. Time for me to whine while you guys prep for the coming of the Piggies.

Good call on the nail polish. Experimenting is half the fun. You can also make dink floats out of the larger backer rod. You can make about ten for the price of one store baught.

I just got back from Sportco in Fife and they have a Steelhead "RAG" kit, which includes 4ea. 4" pieces of white backer rod and one pre-made rag to copy for .88 cents. But they only have 1/2" dia.
