Lamiglas sells a 9.6" spinning rod designated J/S Jig Spinning?
Then they sell a 10' spinning rod designated "float"

Does anyone fish a jig without a float?

Which would you opt for using floats with jigs and roe for both salmon and SH?

Thank you.

Yes, I run a jig by itself when I want the jig ticking the bottom all the way through the retrieve. I can fish an uncommon bottom much better, the float rods generally make mending the float a little easier and has a little faster tip, at least that is the way my float rods are. I would go with a "float" type rod if I was setting the depth and drifting at a specific depth targeting suspended fish.

I would rely far more...like entirely wink...on choosing the length and strength of rod you need to fish in any specific way rather than use the designation that the manufacturer chooses for the rod.

I use almost entirely Lamiglas rods and with respect to the "Vedder" and "Herzog" rods I have always found the "Vedder" rods to make better spoon rods, and the "Herzog" rods to make better float rods, regardless of whose name is on the handle.

I own at least half a dozen rods that the manufacturers call "float rods" or "jig rods"...but the only rod I ever use a float on is my centerpin, and there's pretty much never a jig under it, either wink

Fish on...

Todd

Barkoff,
I won't get to caught up in what the designation is on the rod blank.
I own a couple of X96 JS models and have drift fished, used floats and jigs, tossed spinners and fished spoons in a pinch with it.
It isn't perfect for all fishing applications but is a good all around stick.

My experience is a float rods has a more medium to soft parabolic action. A jig rod has a heavier tip and faster action.
A float rods is designed to cast and fish a float, regardless of what hangs below it. A jig rod is designed to pull, twitch, or flutter a jig all by itself.
