Looking for a decent baitcasting rod and reel that can be used for Salmon and Steelhead. I am usually fishing from shore and will probably be float fishing with it most of the time.

Any advice on what I should be looking for?

Thanks,
Josh

Curado 201E7 with 30# green Power Pro on a Lamiglas 96 JC or the like.

That is a good start.

Pretty much standard set up that Jason mentioned. I like a 10'6".

The Lamiglas 96 JC is the swiss army knife of baitcasters.

+1

As to reels I'd look @ a Revo Inshore or the Shimano Curado, use both & like them both. Revo has a stronger drag, Curado is lighter & smaller. Get a second spool & load one w/ 40 PP other w/ the mono of your choice. Swap as needed.

My 2cents

Well if I could keep the total cost (rod $ reel) to around $300 or under that would be ideal. I do like having nice gear though.

Shimano Convergence or a Berkley IM7 rod will save some coin, and they fish just fine. You might not be one of the cool kids with a Loomis or a Lamiglass, but I outfished a number of friends this weekend with both of those rods.

With a 300 budget I would look at used curados from Craigs list or Ebay. I would spend more on the reel than the rod. You can make due with a mediocre rod but a crappy reel will suck to fish with.

I guess I agree with this if you're talking float fishing. If you're going to drift fish, the rod's more important. I like the used equipment idea. Actually, a used Lami Cert Pro is about the best money you can spend on salmon-steelhead fishing IMHO. I've got 3 or 4 I bought used for $75-$150 or so, based on condition. They're all killer, including 2 of my all time favorite/fishiest rods. If you like cork handles, all the better. Kind of sucks that you can't buy a new Lami Stealth or XMG with a cork handle. Actually has kept me in the used market to a degree.

I agree that $300 budget gives a guy a lot to work with. keep in mind that back in the 80s a high end fenwick glass rod was under $90.

Float fishing combo steelhead & salmon?. I'd get the lami X 10 MTC 8-17# Bill Herzog with a curdado lined up with some moss green Power Pro #40.Good luck,

SZ

Now If ya had the coin I'd get one size smaller rod for steelhead and one size larger for salmon...Just sayin...............Nice tweener set up.

Glad I asked about amount you would be willing to spend.....just makes it easier to help!!!!!

I LIKE Curado reels, prefer the "old green" one but I have a newer 7.0 and it works.

Rods....I just did a search on EBAY, limited the information to: fishing rods, steelhead

steelhead rod....a good steelhead rod, can be used for light salmon fishing.

Price ...... did a search with the price between $50.00 - $150.00, found 4 pages of rods......some I'd like to have, alas....I have too many already.

Good luck......
