Spent a couple of hours in my favorite haunt and was rewarded with a couple of nice natives. Been working on my spoon fishing techniques and its really been paying off in this ultra low water we've been facing. If you haven't taken the time to learn this, you should it's made the difference in me scoring consistently during these tough conditions. Thanks Spoonman!!!!

Speaking of spoons. A few years back on a trip up to canada we picked up a stack of unassembled spoons that said B.C STEEL on them and have the name Bill Herzog on them. I don't use gear very often but one of my partners does. I fly fish and he throws those spoons and I have to say he caught 4 fish to every one I did. I have never seen these spoons for sale anywhere else. Anybody know where they can be ordered. He is down to like the last 4 of them and would probably kiss my butt for a bunch more. He looked into it and found that the company that made them went under. They said that there was another spoon that was almost like it, but when he got some he says that they are not the same.

The B.C. Steel Spoons were made by a company
called Pen-Tac in the Seatle area. The company was sold to Mor-Tac which is a new
spinner supply company in the Granite Falls
area (www.mortac.com). I'm not sure if they
still make the spoons, but most of the product line is still intact! Drop them an
E-mail for a catalog.

Sorry RiverRat but Pen Tac did not sell to MorTac. Jed sold the company to a plating company and they don't make spoons. Maybee MorTac has made a deal with them to copy the mold.
I was lucky enough to purchase Jed's last remaining stock from him, close to 500 spoons, and I too and begining to run low.
I have fished MorTac spoons and do find them pretty effective in comparison to BC Steels. One thing I do with them though (MorTacs) and it does seem to make a difference is to file the top edges of the spoon a little, rounding it over slightly.

Mor-Tac and PenTac spoons are almost identical. Little Cleo is a good spoon as well.

On the spoons...do you split ring the hook to the bottom??? And split ring the top??? I inherited some spoons that were topless and bottomless...I think they'd be good if I rig them!!! It'd be fun to try!

Do you use any other gear when tossing spoons??? Any weight other than the spoon??? Any shrimp on the hook???

Fishin Farmgirl--never,ever add any weight to a spoon!!! Ever!!! Shrimp is also a no-no, you don't want to do anything that will effect the action on your spoon of choice. Read Herzog's book on spoon fishing it is a great read and will give you many good pointers. The only thing you could add would be a piece of tubing/tape, but I have not found that it makes any difference.

I stand corrected on Pen Tac, I obviously was
misinformed about the company transfer. I too
bought some of the last of Jed's inventory and the Mor-Tac catalog appeared to fit the
same style of components.

Just placed another order with Mortac and found out that their copper finish spoons will be in shortly. These are great in low clear water.
