I know it's not typically on this board, but I thot I'd ask. Getting a new spinning rod for trout - looking at the Loomis offerings. They seem a bit lite (TSR 802-2). Anyone got experience with these? Are they too lite in your opinion? Any alternatives you'd suggest?

6 - 7 ft. 2 - 6 lb light / medium action. For a trout rod, I wouldn't spend the extra money on a Loomis. Go to Cabela's and get something modest; a good reel and save the money to fill up the gas tank for your next trip out. They're trout. thumbs

I am very happy with my Fish Eagle 50 Salmon/Steelhead rods from Cabela's. I'm sure that their Fish Eagle 50 rods for trout are as good. They are on sale now for 70 bucks.

I use a loomis 720 6 ft. ultra-light, and a lamiglass bfw 562L 5'6". My wife uses a loomis sjr 6400 5'4" and a lamiglass g1212 6'6". My lamiglass(bfw 562L) is pretty soft, I usually like something with a little faster action on the tip. The other rods we use have that action. Our trout rods are low priced, from $40 to $70. They only have a one year warranty but with care they should last years. Bob R

I do think the Cabela's fish eagle 50 rod is a good one and I almost bought one. Personally, I don't like having the front grip being able to lock down on the reel seat, I like it fixed.

But there are some other models and makes that you might want to check out on the Cabela's website:

Cabela's pro guide rods - $25.
Fenwick Silverhawk - $50
St. Croix Triumph - $80

My Trout rods are Shimano Clarus. $90 and a lifetime over-the-counter warranty. Hard to beat that, and they are really nice rods too. Great action, quality components, lightweight, sensitive and well made. Like said above, Loomis tends to be overkill for Trout unless you are constantly drifting bait in a stream for big wild Browns or something similar. For most of us that just like to whack a few planters with the family a few times a year, there are lower price options.

Actually, the other lami (720 6ft.)mentioned is just right for trout fishing and both loomis' discussed are reasonably priced(Under $80). The 562 L is a softer rod but for kids it's really nice as reefing too hard just bends the rod a little more and is forgiving as far as last minute runs from larger fish.A little soft for trolling, though.Al rods mentioned in this thread will work, though. Good recomendations all. Bob R

I have 4wt fly rod blanks tied up as spinning rods for trout. All of the are 9' + I fish light for trout and have zero trouble landing trout to to 10 lbs and the occasional larger trout on them. You can just buy a noodle rod and do the same .
